Semily combines historic textile architecture, exhibitions and events with paths through the Jizera Valley. Between cultural sites and distinctive landscapes, unusual insights into the history of the town and its surroundings await visitors.

Culture and History

The Nová přádelna building is part of an extensive complex dating back to 1861. It was once one of the most important centres of the textile industry in the Podkrkonoší region. Guided tours of FABRIKA 1861 introduce visitors to the industrial architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries, architectural and technical features, and the history of the textile industry. Exhibitions are regularly held at FABRIKA 1861. All rooms are open to visitors during public events or as part of private guided tours; the rooms of the Ludmila Clock Tower in the FABRIKA 1861 complex are also included in guided tours.

The exhibition “Healers of the Pojizeří and Podkrkonoší Regions” includes a detailed reconstruction of the treatment room of the healer Květoslava Patočková from Semily, as well as an authentic recording of her voice. It also focuses on more than 30 personalities from an area extending from Liberec to Trutnov and south to Jičín. Inside the Sbor Dr. Karla Farského are wood carvings by Vladimír Komárek (1928–2002) dating from 1958: “Master Jan Hus in the Pulpit” and “Karel Farský Reflecting on the Holy Scriptures”. The Sbor Dr. Karla Farského is an expressive building with a dynamic arrangement of its structural volumes and Gothic reminiscences in the form of a pointed arch.

Paths and Landscapes

The Riegrova Stezka trail begins in Semily and runs for 5 km via Bítouchov, the Jizera Valley and Podspálov. It passes through the attractive landscape of the Galerie natural monument and the Údolí Jizery a Bítouchova nature reserve. The route also includes a 77-metre-long suspended gallery offering views of the Jizera.

The green route “Zelená šlápota” passes the open-air exhibition “Journey to Prehistory”.

Events

FABRIKA 1861 organises concerts, festivals, parties and other events for the general public.
