Ostředek can be explored particularly through its château complex and the local history connected with it. Ostředek Château is a Baroque building dating from the 18th century. The château complex also includes the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk, which was built in 1741 on the site of a 14th-century fortress.
Culture and history
The chapel is a brick building with a square floor plan, a gabled roof and a small tower topped with an onion dome. The chapel complex in Ostředek also includes a cross and a retaining wall. The chapel contains a statue of Čechie dating from 1765, which was exhibited at EXPO in Montreal. The reconstructed château chapel was used for regular classical music concerts.
Another historical trace leads to the glassworks in Ostředek. It was ceremonially consecrated on 15 September 1829 under the name Marie; since then, the valley where it stood has been called Mariánské údolí. František Kavalír became the subtenant of the Ostředek glassworks in 1830. Hollow glass was produced there and sold at markets in the surrounding area, especially in Prague; some of it was transported as far as the Česká Lípa area for further processing.
The buildings of the former Ostředek glassworks were demolished after 1891. Today, shards of glass and fragments of melting pots at the site recall the former glass production.
Routes and transport
The marked cycle route 0079 runs from Čakov through Ostředek towards Třemošnice, then turns there via a local road north towards Choratice. The yellow-marked hiking trail runs from the junction with the red hiking trail below Bělčice to Ostředek, continuing via Čakov and Křešice to Český Šternberk.
There are parking areas in the area at the petrol station by the D1 motorway and in front of the guesthouse and restaurant building in Ostředek. Public transport in the area is provided by bus services.
Visits and events
Svatopluk Čech's birthplace room in Ostředek can be visited by prior arrangement through the Lotos sanatorium. It was established in 1898 and later became a destination for numerous visits by readers of his works.
A traditional village festival was held in Ostředek on 17 and 18 May. On both afternoons, it offered a programme aimed primarily at families with children and attracted visitors from the nearby area and beyond.
