Yeşilırmak combines strawberry season and village traditions with a history that spans from the Neolithic period to the more recent past. Nearby, a rocky islet, Vouni Palace, a beach and seasonal nature observations add to the picture. This offers different ways to plan your trip: harvests and festivals depend on the season or specific dates, while archaeological and historical sites tell stories from widely separated eras. If you are travelling with children, you can decide together whether local traditions, history or nature experiences are of particular interest.

History between a rocky islet and a memorial site

Petra tou Limnidi, also known as Yeşilırmak Rock, is a small rocky islet about 100 metres off the coast of Yeşilırmak. Neolithic settlement remains dating to around 5000 BC have been excavated on the islet. The excavations were carried out by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition in 1929. The rocky islet thus brings together a specific coastal setting and early settlement history; the dating of the finds is approximate.

Nearby Vouni Palace stands above Yeşilırmak. According to the account passed down, it was built in the 5th century BC by Doxandros, King of Marion, and has 137 rooms. The Neolithic finds on Petra tou Limnidi and the history of the palace belong to different historical periods. Those interested in the past will therefore find more than one point of reference in the area.

The remains of 15 people who died between 1964 and 1974 while defending Yeşilırmak and surrounding villages are at the Yeşilırmak Martyrs’ Cemetery. One person has a symbolic grave there, but their remains are not in the cemetery. This distinction is part of the memorial site's history: a symbolic grave and a grave containing a person's remains do not mean the same thing here.

Strawberries and the history of the festival

During strawberry season, visitors can pick strawberries in the fields in Yeşilırmak. This is a seasonal experience, and no specific dates are given for the season. It differs from the strawberry festival, whose history includes several phases: after events in 1973 and 1974, the festival was held for the last time in 1977 before a long hiatus.

The Yeşilırmak-Yedidalga Producers’ Association revived the strawberry festival in 2011 as part of the “Strawberry Country” project. According to the account passed down, it has been held every May since then. The strawberries therefore offer two different reasons to visit: picking them in the fields during the season and attending an event with its own history. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the year in question.

Coast and nature through the seasons

The Yedidalga public beach, suitable for swimming and barbecuing, is nearby. The Verigo Festival, a summer festival dedicated to the local Cypriot grape, is also held on the coast of Yedidalga. The beach and the festival offer different ways to plan a trip: one is associated with swimming and barbecuing, the other with a summer tradition centred on a local grape. If you plan to attend the festival, it is worth checking the dates for the year in question.

Another seasonal nature observation is associated with winter. When the mountains are snow-covered, herds of Cyprus mouflons can be seen in winter on the slopes near the village. Sightings are not guaranteed. The conditions therefore differ considerably from strawberry season and the summer Verigo Festival: winter and snow are key here.

Choose the right focus for your trip

When looking for a holiday rental in Yeşilırmak, your planned travel dates are a useful starting point. If you want to pick strawberries, your trip will depend on the season. Festival dates are key if you plan to attend an event; watching mouflons in winter requires snow-covered mountains. Historical sites such as the settlement remains on Petra tou Limnidi, Vouni Palace and the cemetery offer different ways to explore the area's history.

For families, it may make planning easier to choose a focus together rather than trying to include every theme equally. Some may be especially interested in the strawberry tradition, while others prefer archaeological remains, the memorial site or nature in winter. If you also want to explore nearby places, the coast, beach and Verigo Festival can inform your plans. Tailor your holiday rental search to the interests and travel dates that matter most to you.
