Gourri is a small mountain village at the foot of the Machairas Forest, in the Pitsilia region. Traditional folk architecture and cobbled streets shape the village’s appearance. You can also learn about ways of life in the past, local crafts and a nature trail. This gives you several ways to discover Gourri: as a village with its own architectural character, a place of local production and the starting point of the Palia Vrysi Nature Trail.

Village Character and History

The cobbled streets complement the traditional folk architecture and bring Gourri’s village character to life. If the built environment is one of the things you consider when choosing a destination, you’ll find a tangible point of interest here, alongside the various collections and sights.

The Folk Art Museum in Gourri opened in 2015. It displays furniture, tools and household items, as well as rooms from a traditional Cypriot home, illustrating the lives of the village’s residents in the past. The focus is not only on individual objects but also on how everyday domestic life was arranged.

The church of Agios Georgios also brings together architecture and a layered building history. The stone church was built on the site of an older church, dated to around 1500. According to an inscription inside the church, it was consecrated on 24 May 1898. Parts of the iconostasis, the screen inside the church, date from 1906. A predecessor church dated to around 1500, the 19th-century consecration and furnishings from the early 20th century thus stand side by side.

Another collection is on display at the Bike Museum, where you can see bicycles dating from 1925 to 1960. Together with the display of the traditional home, it offers a comparison between different aspects of everyday life—from housing and household items to bicycles from the mid-20th century.

Local Produce and Crafts

Gourri’s culinary tradition includes locally and traditionally made sweets and preserves that visitors can buy. These include homemade jams and “glyka tou koutaliou”—fruit and vegetables preserved in syrup. The products are made by local women. Which products are available may vary.

Crafts are also part of village life. At the textile workshop, fabrics are woven on traditional looms using traditional raw materials. The “Melissionas Makkrianastasi” apiary is next to the village square. It explores the development of beekeeping in the village—from traditional methods to the use of modern machinery—as well as bees and their contribution. Weaving and beekeeping thus offer insights into different forms of local production.

Palia Vrysi Nature Trail

The Palia Vrysi Nature Trail starts in Gourri at the traditional old spring and ends at Mavritsio Waterfall. The path follows the river, crosses wooden bridges and offers glimpses of the region’s plant life. The spring dates from 1916 and stands beside the river at the starting point. The beginning and end of the trail provide distinct landmarks: the spring in Gourri and the waterfall at the destination.

Choosing Gourri as a Holiday Destination

When looking for a holiday apartment in Gourri, you can first consider which aspect of the village you want to shape your stay: its history and collections, local produce and crafts, or the nature trail. This can help you decide whether Gourri suits your interests as a holiday destination.
