Discover Kakopetria
Accommodation in Kakopetria
Kakopetria brings together a protected old village quarter, churches with distinct architectural features, and a museum with three clearly defined themes. There is also a forest that forms part of the National Forest Park, and a hiking trail with two numbered route options. The village offers various starting points for planning a trip: you can explore culture and architecture as well as plan a longer day of hiking, without conflating the destinations or trail sections.
Old Village Quarter, Museum and Churches
Palia Kakopetria, the old part of the village, is protected by the Department of Antiquities and classified as an ancient monument. This historic area is a distinct highlight alongside the individual churches and chapels, each shaped by its own architectural style and function.
The Linos Museum is housed in a building on Old Kakopetria Street. Its three themed sections are dedicated to wine, bread and olive oil. This three-part layout gives visitors interested in culture a clear guide: instead of a single theme, three different subjects take centre stage. This offers a tangible contrast with the historic buildings that also define Kakopetria and its immediate surroundings.
Agios Panteleimonas is Kakopetria’s main church. It was built in the Byzantine style with a dome. Panagia Theotokos offers a smaller architectural scale: the small Byzantine-style chapel was built in 1514 at the entrance to Kakopetria. The two buildings therefore differ in function and size, while both share the Byzantine style. Those interested in architecture will find two distinct examples here, rather than just one architectural style to consider.
Nearby, north of the village, stands Agios Georgios Perachoritis. The stone church dates from 1520, and two of its frescoes have been preserved. This extends the scope beyond Kakopetria’s churches to a historic site in its own right in the surrounding area. Its date, stone construction and preserved frescoes provide specific points of reference that distinguish it from Palia Kakopetria, which is classified as an ancient monument.
Planning a Forest Walk or Hike
Kakopetria Forest is part of the National Forest Park and provides a specific point of interest for exploring the area’s natural landscape. For planning a day’s hike, the Kannoures–Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis trail offers clearly measured options: the route to Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis is 9 km long and takes an estimated three hours. The trail can end there or continue to Kakopetria. This extension covers 12 km and is estimated to take around four hours. The two options therefore differ by 3 km and, based on the estimates, about one hour—a useful comparison when weighing up how much time to allow for your hike.
The longer option leads to Kakopetria, so the village can also be included in your travel plans as the hike’s destination. When choosing a holiday apartment, consider whether your trip will focus more on the historic village quarter and churches or on this longer hiking option.
There is a campsite for tourists near the forestry station. If you are considering this option, check in advance whether it is currently available for use.
