Those planning a trip to Vir can choose between days spent enjoying views of the coastal landscape and active exploration of the island’s interior.
Cycling routes make it possible to cross the entire island by bike. A separate route, the Vir ring, runs around the western and northern parts of the island. Those who want to explore Vir on two wheels can choose between crossing the island and following a route specifically covering these two parts.
Trails for hiking and trekking run along the slopes of Barbenjak and Bandira. Attractive former fire-service tracks link these trails. Bandira is 112 metres above sea level; the hill is home to settlement remains and the ruins of the medieval Church of St George. Cycling and hiking offer two distinct ways to experience Vir’s landscape.
Churches, Fortress and Island History
The Church of St John the Baptist dates from the 13th or 14th century and is now used as a cemetery church. The present-day parish church, the Church of St George, was built in 1845 on the foundations of an older church of the same name. The histories of these two buildings offer a glimpse into different periods of Vir’s religious history.
Kaštelina also tells a story of the island’s long past. The Venetian fortress was probably built at the beginning of the 16th century. Another interpretation dates the start of its construction to the mid-14th century and cites protection from Ottoman raids as the reason.
The archaeological site of Smratina includes an Early Christian or Late Antique church from the first half of the 6th century. An early Romanesque church was later built inside it in the 11th or 12th century. The site bears witness to the continuity of settlement on Vir and to the existence of an island town in Late Antiquity. Villa Lanterna, a renovated historic lighthouse dating from 1881, is also located in the western part of the island.
Traditions, Events and Cuisine
The events calendar features a range of traditions and dates throughout the year. The traditional Vir masquerades take place in January and February. In August, klapa groups gather for Vir third; the local klapa Puntadura traditionally opens the event. Vir Night commemorates the island’s return to 89 families on 13 August 1908.
Cycling and water sports are also among the events mentioned. The traditional Zadar–Vir cycling race is 26 kilometres long, ends in Vir and takes place three times a year; the first date is scheduled for April. The final of the Alpe Adria Jet Ski Tour takes place in September, from Friday to Sunday, at the sandy Jadro beach.
