Discover Šolta by bike, from the water and through its history. The “Slatki Rogač” cycling route runs along the flat waterfront promenade and is suitable for cyclists of all ages and all types of bicycles. Other routes climb, lead to coves or connect different places on the island. Historic buildings and local products also give your trip different points of focus. When choosing accommodation, consider which of these sides of Šolta you would especially like to experience.
Cycling routes with different profiles
For a flat bike ride, the “Slatki Rogač” route is a good option. If you are looking for a route with a climb and views, “Staza sutona nad 7 otočića” is another possibility: it climbs to 170 metres above sea level, where numerous views open up. The two routes therefore differ in their described profiles. When planning your day, you can consider whether a flat route or one with a climb suits you better.
The “Tragovima kraljice Teute” cycling route has a low to moderate physical difficulty level; a mountain bike is recommended. Šolta also has alternative cycling routes between its towns. These include the paved road between Stomorska and Maslinica, as well as well-maintained unpaved paths. When choosing a route, you can also take the surface and recommended type of bicycle into account.
Coves, promenades and experiences on the water
Nečujam Bay consists of eight smaller coves: Bok Supetra, Šumpjivina, Podkamenica, Maslinica, Tiha, Bok od rata, Piškera and Supetar. Nečujam has beaches on both sides of the bay and a long promenade. Sea kayaking trips can start at the main beach and explore the bay and its eight coves. This offers both a walk along the promenade and the chance to view the coastline from the water.
Coves on the south side of Šolta are suitable for bathing, swimming and fishing. There are also dive sites with caves, corals and diverse flora and fauna. Šešula Bay is accessible on foot, by car or by bicycle. Tatinja has several small beaches; a gravel path leads there on foot from Grohote, and the bay is also accessible by bicycle.
Island history and cultural sites
Maslinica is home to a castle built by the Marchi family in 1708 as a defensive structure against pirate attacks. In the past, the Slavića Tower fortress in Grohote served as a refuge during pirate attacks. Its courtyard is used as a venue for numerous cultural events during the summer months. Also in Grohote, the Buktenica & Buktenica Gallery permanently displays works by Eugen Buktenica and his successor, Vicko Buktenica.
Near Grohote, the Church of St Stephen the First Martyr stands beside the ruins of an early Christian basilica dating from the 5th century. Mosaics and numerous sarcophagi have been preserved there. In Gornje Selo, the Church of Gospe u Borima has been designated a Marian shrine since 1995. And in Piškera Bay near Nečujam, the remains of an ancient fishpond can be seen beneath the sea. A 400-metre-long promenade was built there to improve access to the archaeological site.
Olive oil, honey and island products
In Gornje Selo, visitors can sample oils, wines, olives and herbal liqueurs at family farms and an oil mill. At the OPG Tvrdić honey farm, visitors can learn about the world of bees. Šolta olive oil is also closely associated with the island: it is made from the Šoltanka and Oblica varieties, with Šoltanka also known as Levantinka. The oil has a protected designation of origin and has been awarded gold medals.
