Culture and History

The parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Bednja is a Baroque-style medieval church with a façade remodelled in 1802, tombstones and family graves of the Drašković family, and an organ by the Venetian master Gaetano Moscatelli, regarded as a rare example of the Italian school in Hrvatsko Zagorje, as well as a Baroque Marian wayside shrine from 1672 with the infant Jesus. Next to the parish church stands the Pil Madone, a stone public sculpture of the Madonna with Jesus, dated to 1672.

In the wider area around Bednja, the museum of Trakošćan permanently displays collections from the Renaissance to Historicism, including paintings, furniture, weapons and other objects in original historic rooms. Language and Music

Bednjanska music traditionally uses cimbule, bajs (double bass) and three violins, two of which play the leading parts while one is used as a contrasting voice. The bednjanska language is used in most songs of Bednjanska music.

Kavaliri are a cimbule-and-violin ensemble from Bednja. Kavaliri preserve the indigenous music of the Bednja region. The Kavaliri ensemble was formed in 1996 for the performance “Bednjanska svadba” by the KUD “Franjo Sert” from Bednja.

The bednjanska language is protected as intangible cultural heritage. It is considered a linguistic island and one of the most complex Kajkavian dialects.
