Getting around by bike and on foot
The Velika–Dubočanka–Velika cycling route is a 20.8 km circular route. It starts and ends at the Church of St. Augustine in Velika. The route runs through the Dubočanka valley; a sign along the way points to the Lapjak viewpoint. If you want to explore the area by bike, this is a clearly marked loop connected with the valley, the church and the viewpoint.
Mountain bikes and electric bikes can be rented at the Papuk Nature Park administration building, Stjepana Radića 46, 34300 Velika, by prior arrangement only. Bikes rented in Velika can be returned in Jankovac and vice versa; they must be returned by 7 p.m. at the latest. This is useful if you are planning to return a bike at a different location. For train travel, the HŽ Putnički prijevoz timetable lists route 43 between Velika, Požega and Pleternica.
Walking routes also offer clear points of reference. In the 2024 Papučki jaglaci programme, the Staza jaglaca started and finished at the Planinarski dom Lapjak in Velika. This easy mountain trail was listed as a three-hour walk; it passed Stari grad, Tauberove stijene and the Lapjak summit, as well as Šulerov put. The 42nd edition of the long-running mountaineering event took place in Velika in 2024. Another named route is the Walk&Run-Trail Lapjak: it starts and finishes in front of the House of the Pannonian Sea and follows an educational trail in Papuk Nature Park.
Fossils, water and culture
The House of the Pannonian Sea is a visitor and educational centre in Velika. It displays real fossils found on Papuk, including fossilised shells, snails and corals, a dolphin vertebra, shark teeth, fossil leaves and a rhinoceros jaw. Outside, an educational maze with information panels and sculptures of prehistoric animals complements the theme. This brings the history of the Earth to life, from actual finds to engaging outdoor features.
Shhhuma Aquapark is located in the heart of Papuk Nature Park in Velika, right next to the thermal water spring. It has six swimming pools and three water slides, as well as a water tower for children, a children’s water playground and a lazy river. The Duboka Adrenaline Park in Velika, at F. Cirakija 21k, has a zipline. These different attractions let you tailor your holiday to your interests, whether you prefer water activities or a visit to the adrenaline park.
The history of Velika is also visible in the town itself. The medieval old town is listed as a protected cultural property in the Municipality of Velika under the designation Z-419. The oldest Gothic part of the Church of St. Augustine dates from the 14th century, or possibly an even earlier period. Its sanctuary has an outdoor altar for liturgical celebrations in the open air.
Another local highlight: Trenkovo
Trenkovo is home to Baron Trenk Castle, which was the central building on Baron Franjo Trenk’s estate in the first half of the 18th century. Trenkovo Park was declared a monument of garden and park architecture in 1964. The Veličanka stream runs through the park, which covers an area of approximately 8 ha. Visitors interested in cultural history and park architecture will find a different focus here than in Velika’s cycling and water experiences.
