Povljana Municipality combines birdwatching, a variety of cycling routes, beaches and local culture. The Veliko blato bird reserve, routes across rocky ridges and through karst terrain, and sandy and pebble beaches each offer something different. Birdlife and Nature Trails
Veliko blato is a refuge for a wide variety of waterbirds, particularly during the breeding, migration and wintering seasons. So far, 143 bird species have been recorded there. The reserve has a birdwatching tower and an information board. It is located two kilometres from Povljana on the paved road from Povljana to Vlašići.
There are also nature trails around Lake Segal: walking paths lead through the forest behind the lake. A cycling route first passes through a small wood by the lake, then continues northeast through karst terrain. The lake itself lies west of Povljana, next to Dubrovnik Beach, and contains therapeutic peloid sediment.
Cycling Through Varied Landscapes
Of the 14 cycling routes that cross the island of Pag, four are within the municipality of Povljana. The routes described differ in their landscapes and destinations. The Prutna cycling route crosses the rocky ridge of the Prutna Peninsula; from there, you can enjoy a view of Stara Povljana Bay.
The Smokvica cycling route begins one kilometre from Povljana on the road to Stara Povljana Bay and ends in the fishing village of Smokvica. Another cycling route heads towards Old Pag, passing salt pans. Pilgrims from Povljana use it for the pilgrimage on the Feast of the Assumption. The options therefore range from a route across a rocky ridge to trails through woodland and karst, as well as a route associated with the pilgrimage.
Beaches and Water Sports
The beaches differ considerably in their seabed and the water described. Perilo is a sandy beach with shallow water, suitable for water sports and especially for picigin. Livade is also a sandy beach, with very shallow water. Livade is suitable for families with young children.
Mali Dubrovnik, by contrast, is a pebble beach. The Viverone promenade there has a changing cabin and a shower. There is a water park and pedal boat rental at Dubrovnik Beach. Churches and an Annual Klapa Gathering
The “Povljana u pismi” klapa gathering has been held every year since 2002, in early July, in front of the Church of St. George in St. George’s Square. The parish church of St. George was built in 1765. Another notable stop is the Church of St. Martin, a particularly valuable monument of medieval architecture.
