Murter: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Murter is located 15 km from Kornati National Park and serves as a starting point for sailing towards the Kornati Islands. The town is also the nearest departure port to the Kornati Archipelago; from there, the national park can only be reached by boat.

Culture and History

Murter’s maritime heritage includes traditional wooden boats, preserved sailing knowledge and the Latinsko idro regatta, which takes place annually at the end of September.

The Church of St. Rocco was built in 1651 as a votive church following plague epidemics. On St. Rocco’s Day, a statue of the saint is carried in a procession to St. Michael’s Church. Concerts of classical music take place in St. Rocco’s Church in summer.

The parish church of St. Michael was restored in the 18th century and is known for its Baroque altar.

The Colentum archaeological site is considered a Roman city dating from the 1st century BC to the 5th century AD. Visible ancient remains of Colentum are located at the foot of Gradina Hill and in the nearby underwater area. Colentum was a harbour settlement; remains of harbour facilities have been preserved.

The Zavičajna Zbirka Marka Mudronje Repca is located in the Sokolana building on Murter’s oldest square in Staro selo. The collection comprises more than 600 objects classified as protected cultural heritage and is divided into three exhibition areas.

Coast and Trails

Slanica Beach is a shallow sandy beach with a pebbly shoreline; it also has water slides and water parks.

The promenade at the Old Harbour runs along the entire waterfront and offers a walking route.

Activities

Outdoor experiences in Murter include visits to the protected underwater archaeological site of Colentum, organised diving trips around the Kornati Archipelago, beach equipment rental, three cycling routes, and hiking or jogging trails with viewpoints.

Local Character

The first written mention of olive groves on Murter dates back to the 14th century. The tradition of olive cultivation includes harvesting olives for oil and local specialities.

The Murterski karneval, also known as Murterske Bake, uses individually designed and hand-sewn costumes; its tradition dates back 130 years.
