Four Settlements and a Bridge at Tisno

At Tisno, a movable bridge connects Murter Island with the mainland. If you arrive by road, you cross the bridge there; no ferry is needed. Three cycling routes also pass through Tisno. One of them is Route 211, which connects Murter with the mainland in the hinterland of the Tisno municipality. Tisno may therefore be especially relevant to your choice of location if you would like to take the connection between the island and mainland into account when planning your trip.

Exploring on Foot and by Bike

A 3.5-kilometre walking and cycling path connects Murter and Betina, making it possible to explore the entire island on foot or by bike. The specific route length gives you a useful point of reference when planning your outings. There are also six easy-to-moderate cycling routes on the island. If you enjoy including a variety of bike rides in your holiday, you have several designated options; Route 211 adds a connection between Murter and the mainland in the hinterland of the Tisno municipality.

The landscape also offers different options for planning your days. Raduč is Murter’s highest peak and offers an almost 360-degree view. Murter’s beaches generally have fine sandy seabeds and no strong waves. These are two quite different impressions of the island: a viewpoint on its highest peak and beaches with their own distinct seabed and wave conditions.

Cultural Heritage in Betina and Staro Selo

In Betina, the Gajeta is at the heart of a distinctive cultural heritage: the Betina Gajeta is protected by the Croatian Ministry of Culture as part of the national intangible cultural heritage. Betina also hosts the traditional Dan brganja event in August, in honour of the Kunjka shellfish. Another way to explore the local culture is the Museum of Betina Wooden Shipbuilding. Its workshops teach school-age children about Murter’s cultural heritage and traditional wooden shipbuilding. Staro Selo, meanwhile, is characterised by picturesque narrow lanes and traditional stone houses, giving it a distinct architectural character.

Local Cuisine and Events Throughout the Year

The cuisine of Murter Island is based on seafood, freshly caught fish, crabs, shellfish, cephalopods, olive oil and vegetables. Traditional dishes include various brudets, buzara dishes and sočivo. This regional cuisine adds a distinct culinary focus to the island’s cultural discoveries.

Events also vary by location and season. The international Big Game Fishing tournament takes place in Jezera in early autumn. In Murter, “Dani latinskog idra” is held every year in September. Along with Dan brganja in August, these events offer a range of seasonal occasions to consider when choosing when to travel and which location to stay in.

Diving and sailing are possible in the sea surrounding Betina. The island has three marinas: in Murter, Betina and Jezera.
