Vela Luka is located on Korčula in a deep, sheltered bay. The landscape includes clear turquoise water, pine forests, dry-stone walls, and centuries-old olive groves. The wider region also has more than 100 km of hiking and cycling trails.

Landscape and Water
The Blue Way to Vela Spila is a Mediterranean promenade with panoramic views over Vela Luka Bay and the offshore islets. Vela Spila has two ceiling openings called Velo and Malo ždrilo.
In the immediate vicinity, the islets of Ošjak and Proizd are promoted as places for swimming and exploring the underwater world, as well as for their clear turquoise water and unspoiled nature. Proizd is about half an hour by boat from the centre of Vela Luka. It has four pebble beaches reached via paths through pine forest.
Culture
In the town centre, the Centar za kulturu Vela Luka houses a museum, a gallery, and a library. The museum collections include archaeological material from Vela Spila. Around ten large mosaics and a kinetic metal sculpture by J. Laudenslager can be seen in the museum atrium.
The Vela Luka wooden ship collection comprises 41 models made by local woodcarver Nedjeljko Gugić Kotarac. As part of the Luka Mozaika mosaic project, visitors can add a stone in Vela Luka.
Kumpanija is performed exclusively on Korčula; its most important annual performance in Vela Luka takes place on 19 March. The collection in Vela Luka is dominated by two Henry Moore sculptures, which are considered his only works in Croatia.
Cycling
The Drywalls cycling route is a 14.7-kilometre circular route that starts in the centre of Vela Luka. Four cycling routes are described for exploring the western side of Korčula.
Cuisine
Around Vela Luka, rural households offer traditional local cuisine and homemade wines. In May 2025, members of the Vela Luka Olive Growers Association won five Berlin-GOOA awards for olive oil with a high polyphenol content.
