Baćina: Holiday Apartments and Houses

The Baćina Lakes consist of seven lakes; six are connected to one another, while one is separate. As karst lakes, their water surfaces are three to five metres above sea level, while their beds reach up to 32 metres below sea level. They are connected to the seasonal Vrgorsko Lake by a tunnel; a 164-metre-long tunnel and a 700-metre-long channel lead to the sea.

Nature

The Baćina Lakes are part of two Natura 2000 sites for the Neretva Delta and are home to numerous plant and animal species. They are also associated with two endemic fish species: basak and Vrgorac goby.

Activities

The hiking trail through the Baćina Lakes towards Ričevica and Sv. Ilija begins in the Portina settlement of Baćina and is part of the Via Adriatica. A hiking and cycling trail connects six of the Baćina Lakes.

Kayaking is possible on the Baćina Lakes. Traditional lađa boat trips offer guided tours of the lakes; visitors can also take panoramic rides in traditional boats. Swimming is also possible in the Baćina Lakes.

Culture and Local Traditions

The remains of the ancient settlement of Praetoria and those of an early Christian basilica from the 6th century can be found in the Baćina area.

A Stećci necropolis lies near the ruins of the Church of Saint Andrew. The Church of Saint Andrew in Baćina was originally an early Christian single-nave basilica and was later altered with pillars. Its roof may have had a pseudo-basilica form, probably following a renovation in the 11th century.

Plokanje is a more than 100-year-old game similar to boccia, played with stone discs. In nearby Peračko Blato, visitors to the Baćina Lakes can sample traditional local fig products.
