Culture and History
The Knežev dvor was built after the establishment of the Principality of Lopud in 1456; construction was completed in 1508. The building is considered one of the most representative examples of architecture from the second half of the 15th century in this area. The restored Knežev dvor complex showcases Dubrovnik’s maritime tradition.
The historic Đorđić-Mayneri Park on Lopud covers 13,027 square metres and is considered one of the most valuable examples of park heritage in the Dubrovnik area. The Church of Our Lady of Šunj dates from the 13th century and was expanded until the 17th century. It contains parts of a polyptych from 1452 as well as an important altarpiece by Jacopo Palma the Elder.
The Franciscan Monastery and the Church of Our Lady of the Cave are historic religious sites on Lopud. The island’s church museum houses an ethnographic collection with objects from the 18th to the 20th century. The Spanish fortress of Sutvrač dates from 1563.
Nature and Coast
Lopud is covered in lush Mediterranean vegetation and offers walks along the coast. A path from Lopud village leads to the sandy Šunj Bay on the opposite side of the island.
Events
At the end of August, the Ponta Lopud Jazz Festival brings concerts, masterclasses and workshops to Lopud. At the end of September, Ponta Lopud Book Bridge brings writers, thinkers and readers together for discussions and readings.
Cuisine and Getting There
Traditional Dalmatian dishes associated with Lopud include grilled fish, black risotto and octopus salad.
Lopud can be reached by ferry from Dubrovnik’s Gruž port in approximately 50 minutes.
