Osijek is home to Tvrđa, a protected historic centre showcasing Baroque urban planning and military architecture. Its planned structure combines military, civic and religious elements around a central square.

Since 1946, the Muzej Slavonije has been based in Osijek’s Tvrđa. The museum has almost 400,000 registered objects catalogued in around 100 collections. In addition to its work with cultural heritage collections, the Muzej Slavonije presents exhibition projects.

The Muzej likovnih umjetnosti interprets artistic heritage from the Baroque period to contemporary art. Its collections comprise more than 5,000 objects from the fields of painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and medals. The building housing the museum is listed in Croatia as protected cultural heritage.

The HNK Osijek was inaugurated on 7 December 1907 with a performance of Smetana’s “The Bartered Bride”. The Europa Cinema is used for film screenings and occasional cultural events. The Capuchin monastery was built in the 18th century.

Events

Osječko ljeto kulture is an annual cultural event featuring programmes for different generations and interests at several locations throughout the city.

Cycling and River

Along the Drava promenade, Osijek offers an urban cycling experience. A cycle path connects routes through European Avenue and towards the Baroque Tvrđa.

The green banks of the Drava are connected by the suspension bridge for pedestrians and cyclists.

Nature

The Kopački Rit Nature Park is located in the vicinity of Osijek. It is a Central European wetland known for almost 300 bird species.

ZOO Osijek covers 11 hectares in a natural setting on the Drava. In spring, visitors can reach ZOO Osijek by crossing the Drava on the free eko-skel, locally known as the kompa.
