Pušipel and wine culture

Pušipel is the flagship wine of the Štrigova area and a quality brand from Međimurje. It is offered under the names Pušipel Classic and Pušipel Prestige. At the international Urbanovo festival, Pušipel takes centre stage alongside the Međimurje wine scene. The festival takes place in Štrigova in mid-May; its programme includes wine tastings, presentations, expert workshops, open-cellar days, gastronomic evenings and concerts. The theme therefore goes beyond wine alone, combining tastings with professional and cultural events.

The Međimurje Wine Road also offers a range of points of interest: it includes restaurants serving traditional specialities, viewpoints, and cycling and walking trails. Individual visits to wine cellars and wine bars must be arranged in advance by telephone. If you are planning such a visit, take this requirement into account when organising your trip. The circular Pušipelova staza themed route is 53.9 kilometres long and passes through sections of the wine road. Wine bars, restaurants, local craft businesses and excursion destinations are located along the route—a specific way to combine wine culture with other regional themes.

Landscape, trails and special places

The landscape in the Štrigova area is criss-crossed by marked footpaths and forest trails. If you enjoy walking, you will find different types of trails as part of the scenery. You can make the trails a focus of your stay; the Pušipelova staza, in turn, is a clearly described themed route with a specified length and circular course. Plan this route as a separate outing, and choose your holiday apartment with the specific places you want to visit in mind, rather than inferring an undescribed combined route from the various options.

Two protected plane trees on the estate of the Lovrec winemaking family in Sveti Urban are among the distinctive natural and garden sites. The trees are more than 300 years old. In Železna Gora, Zmajev vrt is a botanical and artistic garden. The two places offer different experiences: one features ancient trees on a winemaking estate, the other combines botany and art in a garden. At the Mađerkin breg viewpoint, wind organs add wind-driven melodies to the visit. These places give you different reasons to include individual nature and design experiences in your plans alongside wine and trails.

Culture and regional cuisine

At the centre of Štrigova stands the parish church of St Mary Magdalene. Language is also part of the region’s identity: the authentic Štrigova dialect is listed as intangible cultural heritage of Croatia. If you are interested in regional culture, you can include both aspects in your explorations—a landmark in the centre and a linguistic tradition associated with Štrigova.

Restaurant Terbotz is known for traditional Međimurje cuisine. It uses ingredients from its own garden, orchard and estate, as well as from the surrounding forests.
