Cycling and the Kupa

Routes 48 and 50 together form a cycling route with a total length of 14 kilometres. It starts in Lasinja’s central square. From there, the route passes through meadows and picturesque countryside to the banks of the Kupa. Several spots along the river are designated swimming areas. The route therefore combines a ride through the lowland landscape with the river as its destination; the stated total distance is a useful guide for planning your day.

Route 49 offers a different option: it is 14.1 kilometres long and starts and ends in Lasinja. Of the route, 12.8 kilometres are paved and 1.3 kilometres are gravel. It passes through the lowland landscape and a stretch of forest to Lake Ciglana near the village of Crna Draga. Its length, surface and destination provide concrete points of reference if you would like to include this cycling tour in your travel plans.

The Kupa itself is also central to the experiences described here. Fishing tourism has developed along this stretch of the river. A trip in a traditional wooden boat is recommended for exploring the Kupa around Lasinja. For several years, the riverside swimming area Pod pećinom hosted the river cinema “Riječno kino uz Karlovačko”.

Tradition and early history

The Ethno Museum of Lasinja is housed in a traditional wooden building. It was built and furnished to preserve the memory of local traditional architecture. On display are men’s and women’s folk costumes, traditional furniture and everyday objects. Interested visitors can enter on request. The museum thus offers insight into clothing, home life and everyday items associated with local traditions.

The Lasinja culture is also part of the area’s history. It is an Eneolithic culture dating from 4300 to 3950 BC, found in parts of Croatia, northern Bosnia, Slovenia, the Austrian regions of Styria and Carinthia, and Transdanubian Hungary. During smaller, non-specialist investigations at Talijanovo brdo in 1928 and 1929, mainly pottery fragments and stone material from the Copper Age were found. These finds are attributed primarily to the Lasinja culture; finds from the Vučedol culture were also discovered.

Local culture also includes KUD Antun Klasinc in Lasinja. It comprises a folklore section, a tambura section, a children’s section and a tambura school. “Pokuplje u srcu Lasinje” is one of the area’s major cultural and social events. The KUD and “Pokuplje u srcu Lasinje” are among Lasinja’s cultural and social highlights.

Church and monastery

After the war, a new parish church was built at a new location in Lasinja. On 28 October 2000, it was dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua and the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace. Since 2007, Lasinja has also been home to the cloistered monastery of the Daughters of the Heart of Jesus, known as the White Carmel and regarded as the only monastery of this order in Croatia.

The monastery complex includes the Church of the Sacred Heart. It has an area for worshippers who wish to pray together with the nuns; another area is reserved exclusively for the sisters. The parish church and the monastery represent different religious aspects of the area: the parish church has its own history at its new location and a precise date of consecration, while the White Carmel is defined by its religious order and cloistered life.
