Church history, archaeological heritage, and knowledge of nature shape Općina Nova Kapela. The municipality’s settlements each tell different stories: from a 13th-century church and a Sopot culture archaeological site to a trail focusing on plants and native wildlife. You can choose the focus of your trip—cultural history, discoveries in nature, or both.

Cultural heritage from Srednji Lipovac to Nova Kapela

The Church of St. Luke stands in Srednji Lipovac and dates back to 1275. It is considered the oldest original cultural asset in the municipality of Nova Kapela, making it a notable historic landmark within the municipality. If you are interested in religious buildings and the history of individual places, you can make it a focus of your trip.

The Ravnjaš archaeological site in Nova Kapela is also part of the cultural heritage. Investigations have identified a large site there dating from the Sopot culture. Ravnjaš is classified as an immovable cultural asset under reference number Z-3877. The site offers a different way of exploring the past than the churches: here, the focus is on the archaeological record of the Sopot culture.

The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Nova Kapela was built in the 18th century. The history of the place also includes the All Saints’ Cemetery Chapel, which is the mausoleum of Aleksandar Seitz. Together with the church in Srednji Lipovac and Ravnjaš, these sites offer several different cultural themes—from an 18th-century building to archaeological traces of an older culture.

Nature, knowledge, and tradition in Stara Kapela

The trail in Stara Kapela combines resting places with information about local nature. Along the trail, there are six rest stops with sturdy oak tables and benches. Around 120 plant species are labelled in Croatian and Latin. At some of the rest stops, signs show pictures and names of the birds and wild animals found there. The trail also provides information about local edible and inedible mushrooms. If you enjoy paying closer attention to plants, animals, and mushrooms, you’ll find a variety of things to discover along the way.

Stara Kapela also offers insights into crafts and local food culture. The eco-ethno village includes a weaving museum, and a weaving workshop has also been established there. There is a stocked fishing pond for anglers, and two traditional restaurants round out the offerings. In Stara Kapela, nature, weaving, and traditional cuisine go hand in hand, so you don’t have to limit your trip to just one type of experience.

Market day, folk dancing, and travel orientation

Matijevo is an agricultural and livestock market in Nova Kapela, held on 24 February. Srednji Lipovac also hosted the 28th traditional church folk dance and singing event “Od sva se četiri vjetra!” as part of Brodsko kolo. These examples represent different aspects of local life: the market in Nova Kapela and a church dance and singing event in Srednji Lipovac.

Two railway lines are described to help with a broader understanding of the area. The electrified, double-track main line MG-2C Zagreb–Tovarnik runs for 7.00 km through the municipality of Nova Kapela. The Zagreb–Slavonski Brod main line runs about 1 km north of the Zagreb–Slavonski Brod motorway; in Nova Kapela, it branches off towards Pleternica. This information describes the routes and helps place the municipality in its wider transport context.

When choosing your holiday apartment, you can first consider which aspects of the municipality interest you most: religious buildings and archaeological heritage, nature and weaving in Stara Kapela, or market and event culture. Nova Kapela and the other settlements offer different starting points for planning your trip.
