Chuprene combines a distinctive mountain landscape with river scenery, caves and an extensive network of protected areas. The Lom runs through the municipality and carries water year-round. Forests, Rivers and Protected Areas
The Chuprene Nature Reserve covers 1,439.2 hectares. It was established to protect Bulgaria’s northernmost coniferous forests of spruce and fir. The Chuprene Forest Reserve was also established in 1973 in the areas of the villages of Chuprene, Repliana, Gorni Lom and Stakevtsi. All settlements in the municipality are also part of the Natura 2000 protected areas West Balkan (BG 0002002) and Western Balkan Range and Forebalkan (BG 0001040).
A total of 68 bird species have been recorded in the Chuprene Nature Reserve, including capercaillie, cinereous vulture, eagle-owl and golden eagle. Chuprene Reserve is also considered the only Bulgarian reserve permanently inhabited by wolves. Its diverse birdlife is a defining feature of the nature reserve; Chuprene Reserve is also considered the only Bulgarian reserve permanently inhabited by wolves.
Caves, Cliffs and Trails
In the area of Dolni Lom, the Levi and Desni Suhi Pech caves are protected as a natural monument covering 0.2 hectares. Their features include numerous marmites, sinter pools, cave niches and bat colonies. Geological formations also shape the landscape near Protopopintsi: the rocky banks and waterfalls along the Chuprenska River are protected for their rarity, representative character and aesthetic qualities.
A route description published in 2013 lists the landscapes of Bekinska Shobarka and Martinov Kamak, at an elevation of 1,300 metres, as the endpoints of the municipality’s eco-trails. Their names offer specific reference points for the natural attractions described; check the current route before setting out. This lets you plan around the landscapes that interest you most, without inferring walking times or difficulty from the information provided.
Culture in Chuprene and Gorni Lom
The Assen Balkanski House Museum in Chuprene houses an ethnographic collection of objects from the domestic and working lives of the local population. You can therefore include a cultural focus in your travel plans that differs from the municipality’s nature-related attractions. In Gorni Lom stands the Church of Sv. Paraskeva, a 14th-century architectural and artistic cultural monument of national significance.
