Emen: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

At the edge of Emen, the ecological Negovanka Trail begins and leads through the entire Emen Canyon. Along the route there are viewpoints, as well as wooden bridges, steps and resting places. Approximately three hours are planned for the route.

Nature and Trails

The Emen Ecopath is approximately 1.5 km long. It is located in Emen, 4 km from Balvan, and ends at Momina Skok Waterfall on the Negovanka River. Emen Canyon was designated a natural landmark in 1980, covers 25.5 hectares and reaches a height of approximately 80 m.

The Emen Cave is also part of the landscape. It is 3,113 m long and 40 m deep, has vertical sections and requires alpine equipment and a rope. A large bat colony lives in the cave.

History and Local Traditions

The Emen Fortress is located on the hill next to the entrance to the canyon. It successively served as a Roman, Byzantine and Bulgarian fortress; weapons and coins from these periods were found there.

The Church of Saint Archangel Michael, built in 1879, stands in Emen. The local Tryphon Zarezan winemaking custom includes visits to nearby vineyards, pruning the vines, and sharing banitsa, cured meat and wine.

Practical Information

Visitors to the Emen Ecopath are advised to bring hiking equipment, comfortable shoes and a flashlight. A private car, rental car or taxi are described as the most convenient ways to reach Emen.
