Karst Landscapes and Outdoor Recreation

Large parts of the municipality are included in the Natura 2000 network. Near Bezden are the Bezden karst springs, a protected natural landmark. They were added to the register of protected areas by Ministerial Order No. RD-550 of 27 June 2022. The springs give the natural landscape of this karst region a specific point of interest.

The reservoirs also offer different ways to spend time outdoors: Bistritsa Reservoir in Bezden is well suited to fishing. Bistritsa and Bezden reservoirs also provide places for picnics and recreation in nature. If you enjoy cycling, the municipality has paved, forest, and unpaved routes suitable for different types of cycling. The paved roads are considered to be in relatively good condition. When planning, you can take your interest in cycling and your preferred type of route into account.

Trails, Rocks, and Outdoor Activities

Hiking and cycling tourism offer more ways to experience the municipality actively. Near Gradec, the Orlovi Skali rock formation is used for climbing and walks. There are also eco-trails nearby, offering opportunities for hiking, cycling, and observing wildlife.

Ancient and Medieval Traces

The late Roman residence of Scretiska in Kostinbrod is associated with Constantine I. Scretiska was also the first road station west of Serdica on the ancient Trans-Balkan Diagonal Route. The archaeological site includes Scretiska, early Byzantine Kratiscara, and a rotunda. Covering more than 20,000 m², it is classified as immovable archaeological cultural heritage of national significance. These names and classifications reflect different historical layers to keep in mind if you are interested in the region’s past.

The remains of ancient buildings in the area of the village of Petarch have their own name, too: locals call them the Petarch Monastery. For a holiday with an interest in history, they offer another local point of reference alongside Scretiska, with a traditional name that forms part of their description.

Churches and Local Traditions

The village of Bogyo is home to the Church of St. Petka, built in 1852. Its frescoes were painted by artists from the Debar and Samokov schools. The church is classified as a cultural monument in the second category, of exceptional artistic value. For visitors interested in culture, its specific construction date, frescoes, and special classification come together in one place.

In Kostinbrod itself, the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius is the largest church in the municipality. Its foundation stone was laid in 1905, and it was consecrated on 24 May 1907. Another historical connection leads to the Shijakovo Monastery, where Vasil Levski helped establish the Secret Revolutionary Committee in Kostinbrod in 1871. The monastery also has a recreation area.

The local culture also includes the ethnographic region of the Shopi, which encompasses the municipality of Kostinbrod. The Haidushki Ruchay folklore festival takes place in the village of Gradec each year in early July. The program features performances by amateur and professional ensembles, orchestras, folk groups, and individual performers. The village festival in Bogyo takes place on 14 October, Petkovden. If you would like to plan your stay around such traditions, you can take these dates into account when arranging your trip.

The municipality includes the settlement of Kostinbrod. Other destinations: Botevgrad, Etropole, Kostenetz, Stolichna, Chavdar, Koprivshtitza and Slivnitza.
