Botevgrad: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Botevgrad’s Revival-era clock tower was built in 1866; at 30 metres tall, it is described as the tallest Revival-era clock tower in Bulgaria. In 2007, it was declared a cultural monument of national importance and is also one of Bulgaria’s 100 National Tourist Sites. Culture and History

The Historical Museum of Botevgrad is located in the city centre on Saransk Square, in a reconstructed former courthouse. It preserves more than 20,000 original items, including archaeological artefacts, objects, documents and photographs. The first collection was established in 1937 and opened on 24 May 1937. Behind the museum building is an open-air art space called Lectorium, which is used for educational and charitable events.

Barrel-making is described as Vrachesh’s most characteristic craft and has a long history. The Botev Rebels’ Ossuary in Skravena preserves the skulls of ten rebels from Georgi Apostolov’s group. The annual commemorations on 2 June include historical readings, artistic programmes, exhibitions, competitions, a memorial service, a wreath-laying procession and a ceremonial fireworks display.

Nature

The Muhalnitsa protected area is located within the territory of Botevgrad, in the Zelin villa zone, and protects a marshland and adjacent areas. The Rudinata protected area in the territory of Botevgrad protects ancient beech forests. In Bozhenitsa, the maintained School Forest reserve protects natural oak forests.

Muhalnitsa in Botevgrad’s Zelin villa zone is known worldwide for the unique migration of the common frog (Rana temporaria). At the end of winter and the beginning of spring, common frogs reach Muhalnitsa after a seven-kilometre migration and spawn there.

Activities

The Bozhenitsa–Svode hiking route is approximately six kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 70 metres and is described as suitable for a day trip and a family picnic. The Bebresh River beside the route is described as suitable for fishing. Two lower rock faces for climbing have been set up near the route; climbing there is suitable for beginners with professional equipment.

Bozhenishki Urvich Fortress can be reached via a paved road and then a marked trail; the walk takes approximately 20 minutes. The Zelin villa zone in Botevgrad also has a 1.8-kilometre downhill cycling track with more than 200 metres of descent and challenging features, intended for extreme downhill riding.
