Beli Iskar: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Hiking trails from Beli Iskar lead to numerous peaks, huts and local venues in the Rila Mountains. Above the village lies the Beli Iskar Eco-trail in Rila National Park; it follows the river and crosses it over eight bridges. Nature
About 9 kilometres above the village begins the Central Rila Reserve, which is described as Bulgaria’s largest reserve and one of the largest in Europe.
The Beli Iskar Eco-trail starts above the settlement at an altitude of 1,215 metres and leads to an observation terrace at 1,528 metres. The trail is 7 kilometres long and takes about 3 hours. A car park is available at the entrance to the Eco-trail. Information boards describe sights along the route; there are also elevated walkways for people with disabilities. Rest areas are located along the Beli Iskar Eco-trail, some of them with barbecue facilities. From the observation terrace at 1,528 metres, there are views of the surroundings and tributaries of the Beli Iskar River.
Culture
The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God stands in the village and is dated to 1847. The church is also associated with a meeting between the poet Peyo Yavorov and Lora in 1912. The patronal feast of the Church of the Dormition and the village festival take place on 15 August.
The historic wells and springs preserved in Beli Iskar include Voynishkoto Cheshme, Kadun Kladenets and Belyov Kladenets. The area’s first tourist centre was established in 2003 on the central square of Beli Iskar.
Local Life
Beli Iskar hosts the recurring culinary and folklore event “Feast of Rila Zelnik”, featuring performances by ensembles from local cultural groups. Local zelnik, a pastry filled with spinach or sorrel, can be ordered in advance by guests. A meatless leek zelnik is also part of the Christmas Eve tradition in Beli Iskar.
The Beli Iskar Tourist Association offers opportunities to learn about local traditions and crafts. Mountain and horseback riding routes are also associated with the association.
Cycling
A cycling route begins at the bridge over the Beli Iskar River at the entrance to Samokov. It is classified as technically undemanding. One section follows wide, level paths that look almost like avenues.
