The Archaeological Museum in Sandanski displays an early Christian basilica from the 5th century with preserved mosaic floors, artifacts dating from prehistory to the Middle Ages, characteristic marble funerary portraits from the Middle Struma region, and an open-air complex with a 4th-century basilica and an ancient road.

The settlement at Sandanski’s mineral springs was established in the 2nd millennium BC. By the 6th century, the ancient city had attained the status of one of Bulgaria’s first Christian episcopal centers; remains of this ancient city lie beneath modern-day Sandanski. The Early Christian Complex comprises an open-air basilica, a stoa, and an ancient road dating from the 5th to 6th centuries. It is located in Sandanski’s central pedestrian area and is described as being open year-round with free admission.

Nature

At the heart of Sveti Vrach Park lies Miroto, described as a natural balneotherapy facility and open to visitors. The park contains around 200 Mediterranean plant species, including ancient plane trees designated as natural monuments. Two of these plane trees are described in particular detail: one in the town center is 550 years old and 23 meters tall, while another at the summer pool is 500 years old and 26 meters tall.

The Sandanska Bistritsa River flows through Sveti Vrach Park. There is also an artificial lake with waterwheels and boats. The park is accessible to pedestrians around the clock.

Trails and Surroundings

The Sofia–Kulata–Athens railway line passes by Sandanski. The resort of Popina Luka and the 11-meter-high Popinolashki Waterfall lie 18 kilometers northeast of Sandanski in the Pirin Mountains. Popina Luka is the starting point for various mountain trails and is accessible year-round by private transport; in summer, there is also a public transport connection from Sandanski.

One route starts and ends in Sandanski and leads via Lilyanovo, Popina Luka, Begovitsa, Rozhen, Zlatolist, Melnik and Hotovo.

Wine and Cuisine

Sandanski is part of the Struma Valley wine and culinary destination. Local wine from the Struma Valley is described as having warm southern aromas and a full-bodied taste; the Melnik 55 grape variety is recommended.
