Gela is located in the Perelik area of the Rhodope Mountains at an altitude of almost 1,500 metres. The village lies at the foot of Golyam Perelik, Orpheus Peak and Turlata Peak and is surrounded by meadows and forests with wild fruits and herbs. The terrain around Gela is suitable for hiking.
Culture and History
Local tradition connects Gela with the birthplace of Orpheus. About 5 kilometres from Gela, visitors can explore the ancient Thracian fortress of Gradishte.
The early Christian basilica of Gela was part of a large Christian complex built at the beginning of the fifth century during the Christianisation of the Bessi. The Church of the Holy Trinity was built in 1910 next to the remains of an early Christian monastery that had been destroyed by fire in 1540. Outside the village, there are four active chapels: Ascension, St George, St Marina and the Twelve Apostles.
Traditions and Regional Cuisine
The Ilinden gathering has historical roots in family reunions near St. Elijah Chapel. It takes place on the first Sunday in August in the Ilinden meadows above Gela and includes spit-roasted meat, bagpipe music, dancing and informal bagpipe competitions.
Rhodope rural cuisine includes dishes such as patatnik, cheverme and Smilyan beans.
Getting There
The route to Gela via Narechenski Bani, Hvoyna, Chepelare and Shiroka Laka includes a poorer road section over the final four kilometres.
