Devin: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Culture

The Kaleto Fortress is located next to present-day Devin and is associated with events from the Ottoman period. It was built in the Early Byzantine period and existed throughout the Middle Ages; parts of its walls are still visible. In the area around Devin, the Kemeroviyat Bridge is a legally protected cultural monument. Its stone arch is 3 m wide, 30 m long, and 6 m high.

The museum exhibition in Devin presents ethnographic materials in four thematic halls covering archaeology, the Second Bulgarian Empire, ethnography, and modern history.

Nature

In the area around Devin, the protected locality “Porechieto na reka Devinska” was established by Order RD-618 of 8 July 2002. The canyon of the Devinska River is more than 900 m deep.

The Devil’s Throat Cave lies 17 km south of Devin. It contains a 42 m-high underground waterfall, known as the highest underground waterfall on the Balkan Peninsula. In the surrounding area, Yagodina Cave has 8,501 m of galleries and ranks as the longest cave in the Rhodope Mountains.

Springs and Trails

The Devin area also includes access to the protected locality via the Struilitsa–Kaleto–Lakata ecological trail, with metal bridges, stairs, and rest areas. The protected locality has a 3 km-long zone for angling tourism and catching Balkan trout.

The Struilitsa locality has outdoor facilities including a therapeutic pool, a steam bath, a sauna, and a Jacuzzi. Devin lies at 710 m above mean sea level in the southwestern Rhodope Mountains.

Traditional dishes associated with the Devin region include Rhodope klin, patatnik, Smilyan beans, and Balkan trout.
