Culture and History

The Shumen Fortress is an open-air museum. It is accessible year-round and offers guided explanations in Bulgarian, Russian and English. In the late Middle Ages, it developed into one of the most important urban centers of the Second Bulgarian Empire.

The Dobri Voynikov House Museum is an architectural monument from the period of the Bulgarian National Revival and was built in 1862. The Pancho Vladigerov Museum Complex is a Bulgarian museum complex dedicated to music and to the life and work of Pancho Vladigerov. An exhibition at the Srebrova House presents Shumen’s ethnic diversity.

The Monument to the Creators of the Bulgarian State is located in Shumen at an altitude of 450 meters above sea level on the Shumen Plateau. It traces Bulgarian history through sculptures, old epigraphic excerpts, an outdoor mosaic and original artifacts. The monument includes the largest modern open-air mosaic in Europe.

Landscape and Trails

The Shumen Plateau encompasses a 3,896-hectare protected area designated in 1980 to preserve plant and animal species, the plateau’s landscape, and places suitable for recreation and tourism.

The Shumen Fortress can be reached via tourist trails from Kyoshkovete Park and via a well-maintained asphalt road. The protected area on the Shumen Plateau has 11 marked tourist routes, shelters, pavilions, picnic furniture, and places for overnight stays and dining.

The area around the Shumen Fortress contains meadows suitable for outings in nature.

Other Places

Before Bulgaria’s Christianization in the 9th century, Madara was the most important sacred site of the First Bulgarian Empire. The Madara Rider is carved into a 100-meter-high cliff face near the village of Madara in northeastern Bulgaria.

The Kabiyuk Stud Farm is located 13 kilometers from the center of Shumen, near Konyovets. It includes a horse museum, Battenberg’s summer residence and an icon exhibition. In addition, after booking in advance, visitors can observe horses and foals there.
