Stamboliyski: River, History and Regional Traditions
Accommodation in Stamboliyski
Stamboliyski brings together a riverside landscape, archaeological sites and vibrant regional traditions. Its highlights range from the ancient Via Militaris to a medieval fortress and local fruit and vegetable varieties. You can shape your trip around whether you are especially interested in history, nature or the municipality’s culinary culture.
River and Park near Krichim
The Maritsa is one of the main watercourses flowing through the territory of Stamboliyski Municipality. Another notable landscape feature is the Vacha River terrace: the state hunting enterprise “Krichim” is located there, in Kurtovo Konare. Its protected area includes a park with an extensive collection of ornamental plants, covering 20.6 hectares.
Magnolias, Japanese cherry trees and various types of peony are plentiful in the park. Wildlife is also characteristic of the area: fallow deer, mouflons, wild turkeys and pheasants live on the grounds of the state hunting enterprise. The plants and animals give Stamboliyski’s natural landscape a distinctive character, different from the municipality’s historical attractions.
Ancient Routes and Archaeological Sites
The ancient Via Militaris, also known as the Via Diagonalis, crosses the municipality from the land around Trivoditsi, through the town of Stamboliyski, towards Plovdiv. South of Trivoditsi, a preserved section is designated an archaeological immovable cultural property of national importance. The route links several locations within the municipality; its long course is especially noteworthy for those interested in history.
Further archaeological sites can be found near Novo Selo. In the Baba locality, a medieval fortress and settlement are registered as archaeological sites. In the Batalii locality lies the “Great M Eigel” burial mound (Mound No. 10). It is part of a necropolis of 30 similar structures dating from the 8th century BC. The mound is approximately 13 to 14 metres high and has a circumference of about 500 metres. These dimensions make clear that it is a striking feature of local history.
Varieties and Festival Traditions in Kurtovo Konare
Kurtovo Konare is also known for its traditional varieties. The “Red Kurtovka” peach was selected at Krichim Palace in the late 1930s and subsequently spread to households in the village. Kurtovka is also the name of a local apple variety named after Kurtovo Konare. The traditional Kurtovska Kapia pepper is versatile: it is suitable for growing outdoors, eating fresh and processing—for example, roasting, pickling, and making purées and lyutenitsa.
Another distinctive variety is the Popski bob bean. It has been passed down from generation to generation in Kurtovo Konare for at least 70 years and is grown in around ten households. Since 2015, limited quantities have been sold at the Kurtovo Konare Festival. The festival takes place every year in the second week of September in Kurtovo Konare. If you want to connect your trip with regional culture, this annual event is a reason in its own right to consider when planning your dates.
