Culture and History

About 2 km above Asenovgrad lies Asenova Fortress, a cultural monument of national importance featuring a viewpoint, water reservoirs, rulers’ residences and shelters. Its Church of the Holy Mother of God Petrichka is described as the first Eastern Orthodox church with a tower.

The town is home to the Ethnographic House, a cultural monument dating from the mid-19th century that depicts urban life from the late 19th to the early 20th century. It also preserves carved ceilings known as the “Olympic Sun”, as well as an authentic paved courtyard.

The Old School of St George was the first building in Asenovgrad constructed according to a building plan and was built shortly before the Liberation. Inside, there is a reconstruction of a classroom from this period, a replica of the Gandi Bookshop and exhibitions on civic and cultural societies.

The Dimitar Kovachev Paleontological Museum in Asenovgrad is a branch of the National Museum of Natural History of Bulgaria at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. It presents the evolution of proboscideans and includes a replica of Deinotherium gigantissimum with a skeleton more than 4 metres high. The museum attracts tourists from Bulgaria and abroad and offers educational value for children, school pupils and students.

Nature and Trails

The cultural route “Asenovgrad – Sacred Gate of the Rhodopes” begins in Asenovgrad; the town and the surrounding sights can be explored on foot in a day or over a weekend. The “Road to the Monastery” route follows a historic pilgrimage road from Asenova Fortress to Bachkovo Monastery along the river.

The route from Bachkovo Monastery to Marciganitsa Hut takes about four hours and passes through the Chervenata Stena Biosphere Reserve. Along the route, there is access to Slivodolsko Padalo Waterfall, rock bridges and caves.

Dobrostanski Biser Cave near Dobrostan contains stalactite formations and sinter lakes, extends for 727 metres and reaches a depth of 61 metres. The surrounding area of Dobrostan offers opportunities for paragliding, mountain biking and orienteering.

Dining and Wine Country

Stanimashki sarmichki are described as one of Asenovgrad’s most characteristic dishes and as a dish found only there. Asenovgrad is also described as the place with the deepest traditions for the Mavrud grape variety within the wider wine region around Plovdiv. In the broader area around Pazardzhik and Plovdiv, wineries and wine tourism destinations are concentrated in Brestovitsa, Perushtitsa and Krichim.
