Bachkovo's active St Athanasius Church was built in 1848. The monastery's winter church, St Archangels, was built in the late 12th or early 13th century.
Nature
The Chervenata Stena Biosphere Reserve lies directly next to the Bachkovo Monastery and is home to rare animal species. The stream flowing down from Kluviyata forms two waterfalls in the valley. In the Chervenata Stena area, Haberlea rhodopensis blooms every spring with sky-blue flowers on the surrounding rocks.
Trails
A four-hour hike from the Bachkovo Monastery to the Marciganitsa Hut crosses the Chervenata Stena Biosphere Reserve. A cultural route leads from the Bachkovo Monastery via Kluviyata to the St Archangels Chapel and takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
The historic pilgrimage route Bachkovski Road runs in the nearby area from Asen's Fortress to the Bachkovo Monastery, passing along sections of Roman and medieval roads. In the Chervenata Stena route area, there are views of Slivodolsko Falls, rock bridges, and caves.
Cuisine
The Chepelarska River, locally known as Chaya, supplied the Bachkovo Monastery with trout for many years; nearby restaurants serve trout.
Geographical Location
The Bachkovo Monastery lies approximately 500 metres south of the village. Bachkovo is about 8 km from Asenovgrad and 23 km southeast of Plovdiv. The village serves as a gateway to the Central Rhodopes and lies on routes towards Pamporovo and Smolyan.
