Rakitovo lies in the Western Rhodope Mountains, in the southeastern part of the Chepin Valley. The municipality is situated at an average altitude of 811 metres. Its defining features include thermal mineral water and the palaeontological finds in Dorkovo. Its setting and geological history give a stay here different points of interest.

Altitude, Mineral Water and Batak Reservoir

The “Rakitovo” mineral water deposit covers just under 3 km² in the lands of the towns of Rakitovo and Kostandovo. Its average altitude is 760 m. The geographical extent of this deposit therefore goes beyond the place name Rakitovo and reaches into the lands of Kostandovo.

The municipality’s thermal mineral waters reach temperatures of up to 50 °C and have a low mineral content of 0.36 g/l. Alongside finds from geological history, temperature and mineral content are natural features that add another focus to a stay here.

In the wider region, the municipality is part of the Batak Reservoir area. The reservoir has a storage capacity of 315 million m³ and a flooded area of 22 km². These two figures describe different aspects: storage capacity refers to the volume the reservoir holds, while the flooded area describes its extent. This adds a wider regional water setting to Rakitovo’s specific local context.

Places and Orientation

There are three railway stations within the municipality: Tsepina, Dolene and Kostandovo. The name Kostandovo thus appears in two contexts: as a station location and as one of the lands across which the mineral water deposit extends. The three station names provide specific points of reference within the municipality.

The “Tsigov Chark” holiday complex lies on the shore of the Batak Reservoir, and part of it is located within the lands of Rakitovo Municipality. This distinction is useful when looking for a holiday apartment: Tsigov Chark is a specific location by the reservoir, but it is not coterminous with the entire municipal area.

Places for Culture and Geological History

The Pliocene Park in Dorkovo presents finds from the Pliocene, discovered at the palaeontological site in the area around the village. Dorkovo is part of Rakitovo Municipality. Bringing the displayed finds together with the area where they were discovered gives a visit a clear focus on the geological history of the place.

A visitor information listing from 2026 mentions themed guided tours and an audio-visual presentation with narration that reproduces the sounds of prehistoric animals. The guided tour offers a thematic introduction, while the audio-visual presentation adds an acoustic element. If either offering is important to your plans, check its current availability before your visit.

Cepina Fortress is situated above the village of Dorkovo. In Rakitovo itself, the clock tower is one of the landmarks. These are two distinct points of interest for culture-minded visitors: the fortress above Dorkovo and the clock tower in Rakitovo.

Choose the Right Location

When choosing a holiday apartment, consider which theme you would like to shape your stay: geological history and the fortress point to Dorkovo, while the clock tower points to Rakitovo. The mineral water deposit extends across the lands of Rakitovo and Kostandovo; Tsigov Chark is a separate location by the Batak Reservoir, and only part of its holiday complex lies within the municipal area.
