Lesichovo brings together diverse landscapes, archaeological traces and regional traditions. To the north and west, the municipality includes parts of the Ihtimanska Sredna Gora and Sashtinska Sredna Gora; to the south and southeast, the northern foothills of the Upper Thracian Plain extend into the area. The Topolnitsa is the municipality’s main river and flows through its territory. The mountain ranges, river and plain thus offer different points of interest for nature and culture enthusiasts.
Landscape and Nature in the Municipality
The municipality’s protected areas help preserve the landscape and protect, maintain or restore characteristic habitats. They also offer opportunities for tourism. One specific natural attraction is the woodland of Borimechkovo, where the flora includes more than 110 species with national protected status. In addition to the mountain ranges and the Topolnitsa, this is another designated point of interest for those interested in habitats and plants.
Ecopath and Roman Bridge
The route of the ecopath to the Roman Bridge, as described in 2024, starts in Kalugerovo and heads towards the large bend near Lesichovo. According to the 2024 description, the facilities include an information board at the beginning about the municipality’s cultural and historical landmarks; further up, boards explain the wildlife and vegetation of the Sredna Gora. Tables and benches along the ecopath provide places to rest. In 2024, the bridge was described as almost completely preserved, with its arch in excellent condition. Traces of Antiquity and Old Routes
West of Borimechkovo, on a raised terrace near a small stream, lies a Late Roman settlement covering approximately 4,400 square metres. A single-layer Late Roman settlement near Borimechkovo came to an abrupt end in a fire. Coin finds date the fire to no earlier than AD 347. Finds also indicate continuity of settlement before and after the fire in the mid-4th century. In the regional context of Late Roman Thrace, the site is considered historically significant. About 1.5 kilometres southeast of Pamidovo, traces point to a possible Thracian sanctuary.
Kalugerovo is also connected with historic routes: a branch of the Trajanic Road and a medieval or Ottoman route passed through the village. The latter ran along the Topolnitsa from the Pirdop area towards the Pazardzhik Plain. According to tradition, a small Christian monastic community was established in Kalugerovo in the first millennium AD, from which the Orthodox monastery of “Sveti Nikola,” also known as “Sveti Nikolay,” developed.
Folklore and Seasonal Traditions
The folklore singing group of the Narodno chitalishte “Otets Paisii–1890” takes part in local, municipal and regional celebrations, as well as folklore festivals. The custom “Dervishovden in Lesichovo” was nominated in 2014 for the national selection “Living Human Treasures – Bulgaria.” In the municipality’s villages, the seasonal custom Sirni Zagovezni is celebrated with Kukeri, Dzhumali and Dervishes.
