Discover the River and Karst

Panega Attraction is located in the heart of Panega Landscape Park and offers trips on the Zlatna Panega. Options include a pedal boat, a rowing boat, one- and two-person kayaks, and an excursion and photography cruise boat. The different watercraft offer different ways to enjoy an outing on the river. Panega Attraction operates year-round.

The Geopark also offers its own way to explore its themes: local residents and tourists can take part in educational and informational programmes there. At the entrance to the Geopark, in the car park just before Lukovit, there is a tourist information centre with maps, brochures and other information about the Geopark. This can help you find your way and better understand the geological and landscape features.

The Aglena eco-trail follows the Vit River through the Studenets Protected Area. It begins at the Slona rock formation and leads to the site known as the People’s Cave. Along the trail, there are markers, visitor areas with tables and benches, a gazebo and a shelter, a wooden bridge, information boards and signposts. This route combines landscape views with clear waypoints and designated visitor areas.

Other natural features can be seen at nearby named locations: in the Kötlen area is a particularly pronounced old meander of the Zlatna Panega. The Kuklite rock formations lie on the Karlukovo Karst Plateau. The Karlukovo Karst Complex is a protected natural landmark within Lukovit Municipality. The river bend and the rock formations represent different aspects of the landscape.

Prohodna Cave offers another distinct highlight. Several sectors have sport climbing routes of varying difficulty, considered among the most challenging in Bulgaria. To reach the cave, a turnoff from the road to Lukovit leads to a car park at the small entrance to Prohodna Cave. Climbing and a river trip are different ways to experience the region; your interests can help shape your plans.

Rock Churches and History

The surviving Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God at Karlukovo Monastery was built in the second half of the 16th century as part of the large monastic complex. Its name and place within the monastery provide a tangible connection to the region’s cultural history. Fragmentary frescoes from the 14th century survive in the rock church of St Marina. A movable platform provides access to the church.

The rock church of St Grigorij is also notable for its wall paintings: two fragmentary layers of frescoes from the 14th and 17th centuries survive there. Comparing the two churches draws attention to their different fresco traditions: the paintings mentioned at St Marina date from the 14th century, while St Grigorij preserves two layers from different periods. Those interested in history and visual art will find a different way to experience the region than on the river or in the karst landscape.
