Local Character

Winegrowing and grape processing are characteristic of Susam. The vineyards cover 2,905 decares. Grape varieties associated with Susam include Merlot, Pamid, Muscat Bianco, Muscat Gianco, Vilnie, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mavrud and Shira. An expansion of the vineyards by 750 decares in Susam included the varieties Muscat Bianco, Muscat Gianco, Vilnie and Sera.

Culture

A medieval church once stood on Taushan Tepe; a chapel was later built over its foundations. The foundations of an old church on Taushantepe in Susam are classified as an archaeological site of local importance. Susam also has an art monument and several archaeological monuments of local importance.

The Budilnik Chitalishte in Susam has a 14-member male carol-singing group and a ten-member women’s singing group. At a Trifon Zarezan programme in Susam, ritual vine pruning in the Kartala area was part of the programme. The programme also included a competition for homemade wine, which was judged at the local Chitalishte.

Nature

Susam is located within the Natura 2000 site Rodopi Sredni, code BG0001031. In the municipality of Mineralni Bani, six established educational eco-trails connect natural and cultural attractions; along the routes there are rest areas, pavilions and barbecue areas.

Geographical Location

Susam is located 3 km from Mineralni Bani, off the Plovdiv–Kardzhali road. The third-class Plovdiv–Kardzhali road includes the Susam–Karamantsi section, which passes through the municipality of Mineralni Bani.
