Stambolovo: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Nature

Parts of Stambolovo Municipality lie within the Studen Kladenets, Most Arda and Eastern Rhodopes Natura 2000 zones. The Arda has cut through the Rhodope slopes; volcanic rock complexes reach heights of up to 150 metres there.

The protected site of Golemiat Sipey covers 653.9 hectares on the northern shore of the Studen Kladenets Reservoir. It includes rocky complexes and scree slopes where endangered birds nest. Between 9 and 14 pairs of griffon vultures breed on the rocks of Golemiat Sipey. The rocky complexes should not be visited from December to August, as this is the vultures’ breeding season.

In the wider Stambolovo area, guided birdwatching tours and walks are offered along two ecological trails. One route in the wider Stambolovo area passes the Thracian megalithic monument of Kromlekh; the route description mentions orchids and several bird species in the surrounding area. Stambolovo Municipality promotes ecological, rural, hunting and water-sports tourism associated with its mountainous terrain, mild climate and abundant water resources.

Culture

A prehistoric settlement dating from the 5th–4th millennium BC was identified on the Beshkova River in the Stambolovo area. A Thracian chariot dating from the 2nd century was discovered at Dvete Chuki in the Stambolovo area. Archaeological investigations near Stambolovo uncovered remains of Slavic settlements from the period of the First and Second Bulgarian Empires.

Kovan Kaya is described as a protected Thracian rock sanctuary with several hundred trapezoidal cult niches. An asphalt road passes within 100 metres of Kovan Kaya. Stambolovo’s Christian religious sites include the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.

Wine

Stambolovo Winery is located in Stambolovo next to the municipal building. Merlot from the Stambolovo area is described as an internationally recognised example of Bulgarian Merlot.
