Around Dolno Cherkovishte are impressive remains of Thracian and Roman history, as well as a protected natural area. Rural ecotourism and angling tourism are documented in the Arda Valley.
Culture
Near Dolno Cherkovishte, at Kovan Kaya, there is a significant Thracian megalithic cult complex with more than 100 trapezoidal rock niches and a cave-like tomb cut into the rock. The archaeological complex also includes six additional cult niches approximately 500 metres northwest of Dolno Cherkovishte, a tomb cut into the summit of the rock massif, and traces of a large Thracian settlement nearby.
Popmartin's Hole in Dolno Cherkovishte is described as an ancient Thracian royal tomb. The entrance lies beneath a row of twelve trapezoidal niches. The tomb has a rectangular chamber measuring 2.75 metres long, 1.50 metres wide and 1.80 metres high.
Hisarlaka Fortress has a trapezoidal ground plan. Its two-metre-thick walls were built from local rubble stone bonded with white mortar. A Thracian settlement from the Roman period was also found near Dolno Cherkovishte, next to an ancient Roman road.
Along the Arda near Dolno Cherkovishte, the remains of two fortresses are recorded: one at Kartal Kaya, also called St George, and the other at Sarlaka, also called Hisarlaka.
Nature
The Dolno Cherkovishte protected area covers 4,691.116 decares. It was designated to protect the habitats of protected, rare and endangered plant and animal species.
Things to Do
The route through the Dolno Cherkovishte area is 24 kilometres long and takes approximately six hours. Its sections pass through deciduous forest, open terrain and along the Arda River.
At a birdwatching point along the route, visitors can observe, among others, Egyptian vultures, black storks, saker falcons, Mediterranean falcons and white-tailed buzzards.
