In the municipality of Ruen, protected landscapes, trails with distinctive destinations and vibrant village traditions are among the defining discoveries. You can shape your stay around nature, folklore or regional everyday culture: one eco-trail crosses the ridge of Mandra Bair, while another leads through the Kyoklyuka landscape to a rock massif. In Lyulyakovo, an ethnographic collection and a pottery workshop tell the story of local ways of life and craftsmanship. These different points of interest can help you decide which part of the municipality would make the best base for your holiday rental in Ruen, depending on your travel plans.

Discover the protected area and landscape

The Natura 2000 protected area BG0000137 Reka Dolna Luda Kamchia (Lower Luda Kamchia River) includes areas in several villages in the municipality of Ruen. These include Dropla; other villages named are Bilka, Vishna, Daskotna, Karavelovo, Lyulyakovo, Rupcha and Tranak. The place names make clear that the protected area extends across parts of several villages, not just the village of Ruen.

The protected habitats include semi-natural dry grasslands and scrubland on limestone of habitat type 6210, which includes important orchid habitats. This gives the landscape a specific natural interest that goes beyond the names of the trails. Visitors interested in limestone habitats and orchids will find a different thematic focus here than among the villages’ cultural offerings.

Eco-trails with different destinations

The Ruen–Snyagovo eco-trail crosses the ridge of Mandra Bair and continues to the Luda Kamchia tourist hut. This makes it easy to factor the trail into your day’s plans based on its clearly named route and destination. The Topchiysko–Chudni Skali eco-trail runs through the Kyoklyuka landscape to the Chudnite Skali rock massif (“The Wonderful Rocks”).

The Pripek eco-trail follows the Eleshnitsa River to the Yarmas Kaya rock massif. When planning your trip, you can choose which of these specific natural destinations interests you, without combining the three trails into a single route.

Village traditions and folklore

A traditional municipal festival is held every May in the village of Ruen. Folklore groups from the municipality take part, along with visiting groups. Hederlez festivities include, among other things, folklore concerts and horse competitions.

The spring custom of Lazaruva is observed in Ruzhitsa, Lyulyakovo and other villages in the municipality of Ruen: 25–30 girls in traditional dress sing and dance, then visit the houses of their village under the leadership of a female leader. The Kukeri custom is observed in the municipality of Ruen on Sirni Zagovezni. The folklore Kukeri group consists of 30–35 participants, makes its own masks and accompanies the custom with large bells and cowbells. Lazaruva and Kukeri therefore differ both in the groups described and in the visible and audible elements of the customs.

Everyday culture and crafts in Lyulyakovo

The ethnographic collection at the community cultural centre in Lyulyakovo contains more than 400 exhibits in three sections: “Everyday Life”, “Textiles and Clothing of the Residents of Lyulyakovo” and “The Journey of Bread”. It documents the clothing, everyday life and customs of the descendants of Bulgarians resettled from Asia Minor. Visitors interested in ways of life and heritage can explore a collection organised by theme, ranging from everyday objects to textiles and bread.

Pottery is also a traditional craft in the municipality of Ruen. A ceramics workshop has been operating in Lyulyakovo for about 30 years, making a range of products such as large storage vessels, jugs and tableware. The Monastery of St. Joachim and Anne in Lyulyakovo is a religious shrine. In the village of Tranak, the archaeological discovery “The Triple Miracle” received an award as part of the “Wonders of Bulgaria” initiative.

These places and points of interest can help you choose a holiday rental: nature trails, traditions and culture are associated with different named locations in the municipality. Consider which experiences matter most for your trip, and use them to guide your search for a suitable base.
