The beaches in Primorsko Municipality cover a total area of 1,045,000 m². Of this, 523,000 m² consists of protected dunes and beaches. Arkutino, also called Bear Marsh, is a marsh and reserve in the municipality. It is known for its unspoilt nature and rare plants such as the sea daffodil. Alongside the beaches, the marshland and plant life are therefore distinctive natural features in their own right.
Nearby, the Ropotamo Reserve encompasses the mouth of the Ropotamo River, the Arkutino marsh, rare longose forests and various coastal rock formations. Organised tourist boat trips on the Ropotamo River are permitted in the reserve. Municipal signs point to eco-trails leading to Begliktash, the rock formation “Luvskata Glava” and the Ropotamo River. The rock formation was declared a natural monument in 1947. Begliktash is 5 km north of Primorsko, at the foot of the Strandzha Mountains. Begliktash is regarded as a Thracian sanctuary and an ancient observatory. A tourist route from Yasna Polyana leads in one hour, over a distance of 4 km, to the “Sv. Sv. Konstantin i Elena” spring and the Yasna Polyana Reservoir. Archaeology and History in Primorsko and Kiten
The ethnographic collection at the Primorsko Historical Museum presents life in the Black Sea Strandzha region during the last century. Traditional costumes, household items and vessels show different aspects of everyday life. The museum also displays archaeological objects found during excavations in the area and in the waters of Primorsko Municipality. These include a gravestone from the Chenger area, the Thracian sanctuary of Begliktash, dolmens and the fortress wall of Urdoviza in Kiten. The Historical Museum is intended to be accessible year-round, with guided tours in Bulgarian, Russian and English, and access for people with disabilities.
Urdoviza was an important Bulgarian fortress and naval base. Its restored fortress walls stand at the site of present-day Kiten. In Kiten, the permanent exhibition “Secrets from the Sea Floor” displays finds from a submerged prehistoric settlement, a sunken ship and anchors. Artefacts from archaeological investigations of the Urdoviza fortress wall are also part of the exhibition. It is located in the centre of Kiten; a guided tour in Bulgarian is planned for the summer season.
Further cultural attractions can be found in Yasna Polyana and Novo Panicharevo. The “Balgarskata Yasna Polyana” museum exhibition in Yasna Polyana was created with the support of Primorsko Municipality and the mayor’s office of Yasna Polyana and opened in 1998. It covers Tolstoy’s Russian estate and a Tolstoyan colony that existed in Alan Kayryak from 1906 to 1908. In Novo Panicharevo, the “Sv. Troitsa” church was built in 1881 and has exceptionally rare icons. A museum there opened in 2014 in the authentic, centrally located house of Strati Dimitrov.
