Culture

The Church of Saint Nicholas in Gaytaninovo was built in 1839 and is associated with the Bulgarian religious and educational revival of the village. A 20-metre-high bell tower was added in 1885; in 1890, a large clock was installed, which is described as still keeping accurate time. A New Bulgarian School opened in Gaytaninovo in 1858. A teachers' congress held in Gaytaninovo on 11 October 1908 founded a teachers' association. Through its school tradition, the village became a centre of Bulgarian cultural identity in the Nevrokop region.

At the Kulata site, approximately 4 km west of Gaytaninovo, pottery indicates settlement during the Early Iron Age. The fortification wall of Kulata was partially reused in the Middle Ages; remains of an ancient fortification wall have also been preserved at Kulata. Kulata Fortress is registered as an archaeological cultural monument of national importance. The Church of Saint George in Gaytaninovo was built at the beginning of the 18th century.

Gaytaninovo developed in the 18th and 19th centuries around the extraction of iron ore from magnetite sand. The iron ore mining areas around Gaytaninovo covered approximately 500 decares, and the ore was washed in artificial pits and stone channels. The village's smithies produced horseshoes and nails for markets in the Vilayet of Thessaloniki; around 120 smithies were operating in Gaytaninovo. Iron ore extraction continued until 1870. Blacksmithing and house building were established crafts in Gaytaninovo.

Nature

The Omaya Eco Village is located next to Gaytaninovo on the southern slopes of the Pirin, between the Pirin and Slavyanka mountains and near the Greek border.

The Ali Botush Reserve lies in the Slavyanka Mountains south of the Pirin and protects relic forests as well as a diverse plant life. It encompasses more than 1,400 herbaceous plant species, including endemic species of Bulgaria and the Balkans. Visits to the Ali Botush Reserve are restricted to designated paths and require prior coordination with the Ministry of Environment and Water.

Zhingov Bryast is a protected site in the area of Gaytaninovo.

Trails and Activities

Omaya offers mountain trails and cycling routes in Slavyanka. Omaya also provides football, table tennis, bicycles and forest cycling routes; there is also a heated outdoor pool there.
