Kovachevitsa is located in the western Rhodopes and was declared a historical and architectural reserve in 1977. The village was established after 1656 during population movements associated with attempts to convert the Bulgarian population in the Rhodopes. During the Bulgarian National Revival in the 18th and 19th centuries, Kovachevitsa was an educational centre.

The architectural reserve of Kovachevitsa includes St. Nikola Church, a cell school, a secular school, 112 residential buildings and five farm buildings. The Kovachevitsa house is a southern Bulgarian subtype of the Rhodope house, which developed over two to four storeys. The typical houses have two or three storeys with projecting upper floors and were built in the 18th century. Six houses in the reserve have the status of cultural monuments of national significance: Daskalova, Shungureva, Dishlyanova, Shimerovi, Bangova and Pilareva.

St. Nicholas Church in Kovachevitsa was built in 1847; a four-storey bell tower was added in 1900. Walks through Kovachevitsa's cultural and historical reserve are offered year-round, including a themed talk and the opportunity to visit art galleries. Visitors can also stroll through the village's narrow cobbled streets and sample traditional Bulgarian dishes. The 2026 “Off the Beaten Path” chamber music festival is based at the Svetlina community centre in Kovachevitsa and includes new music, commissioned works and world premieres.

Hiking

The Kaninska Eco-Trail is 13 kilometres long and passes through wooded and rocky terrain. It offers hiking opportunities lasting between two and ten hours. The main circular route follows the Kovachevitsa–Skrebatno–Gorno Dryanovo–Kovachevitsa route. One section connects Skrebatno with Kovachevitsa via the first bridge over the Kanina River. Another section leads from Kovachevitsa through the underground Rizzova Dupka corridor to Gorno Dryanovo.

Tourist routes begin in Kovachevitsa and lead to the Siniya Vir waterfall. More than 500 metres from Kovachevitsa, on the road to Siniya Vir, there is a bivouac with a shelter, tables, benches and fire pits, as well as spaces for picnics or tents.

Nature

The Kaninska Eco-Trail passes through rocky, wooded habitats shaped by rivers and is associated with rare plant and animal species. Near Kovachevitsa, the Tumnata Gora Reserve is located 16 kilometres away at an altitude of 1,400 to 1,600 metres in the upper reaches of the Kanina River. Kozi Kamak is a rock cult complex 14 kilometres northeast of Kovachevitsa.
