Holiday apartment in Orašje: Sava, culture and film festival

Orašje lies on the right bank of the Sava and is predominantly flat. The river and the open landscape therefore shape the spatial character of the town.

Landscape

The “Na Savu” regatta ends on the banks of the Sava in Orašje. During this event, participants cover a route of around 20 kilometres on the river using kayaks, canoes, boats, SUP boards, catamarans and other watercraft.

Geographical setting

Orašje is located around 12 kilometres from the E70 motorway and the Županja toll station, as well as on the important Orašje–Tuzla–Sarajevo–Ploče main road. The wider municipal area also contains an important border crossing between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia.

Culture

The “Ivo Gregurević” Cultural Centre was founded in 1994 and is a public cultural and educational institution of particular importance to Orašje. It includes a multifunctional hall with 222 seats. Film screenings were held in the cultural centre’s cinema hall as part of the “Dani hrvatskog filma Ivo Gregurević” event; admission was free. A film workshop was also held in Orašje in the run-up to the film festival. Young filmmakers learned there about the process from developing an idea and preparing a screenplay through casting, rehearsals and filming to editing and screening.

The “Dani hrvatskog filma Ivo Gregurević” film festival is held regularly in Orašje; its 31st edition was scheduled for 2026. The Republic of Croatia awarded the “Dani hrvatskog filma Orašje” film festival an honorary certificate for its exceptional contribution to presenting Croatian national film production.

History

Orašje was founded in 1863 under the name Donja Azizija. French engineers laid out the settlement in a grid pattern. The wider municipal area contains archaeological evidence of the Vinča culture; Neolithic settlements were located in Matići, Bok, Oštra Luka, Tolisa and Donja Mahala. Roman roads and possible settlements in Vidovice, Tolisa, Bok and Oštra Luka are documented in the wider municipal area for the 3rd century AD.

The Tolisa Franciscan Monastery, a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is also located in the wider municipal area of Orašje. The Vrata Bosne Museum in the monastery preserves collections of paintings, archaeological finds, coins and textiles, as well as a library.

Events

Public life also includes Orašje’s International Motorcycle Meetings, traditionally held at the beginning of May. The sports and leisure centre in Orašje includes swimming pools, football pitches and tennis courts.

A culinary tradition was showcased at Municipality Day: for the ninth time, Orašje hosted a cooking competition for fiš-paprikaš and čobanac, attracting more than 1,000 visitors. The event thus combines the two dishes mentioned above with a larger local celebration.
