Jablanica makes history visible in a specific place while also opening up routes along rivers, lakeshores and through forests. At its centre is the historic area Historijsko područje – memorijalni kompleks Bitka na Neretvi, which the Commission to Preserve National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2009.

Culture

The Bitka na Neretvi memorial complex comprises the museum building, an event area, an assembly square with an eternal flame, the destroyed bridge and a bunker building. Historical architecture, commemorative culture and a clearly defined site are therefore brought together, without the individual components of the complex losing their own significance.

At the Bitka za ranjenike na Neretvi Museum, visitors can view five additional exhibitions alongside the main exhibition, Bitka na Neretvi. The exhibitions are bilingual, in Bosnian and English. Most are also accompanied by audio guides in Bosnian, English, German, Arabic and Turkish.

The destroyed bridge is the central element of the Bitka na Neretvi memorial complex and at the same time the museum’s most important exhibit. The original bridge was built in 1888 during Austro-Hungarian rule as part of the narrow-gauge Narenta Railway. During the Battle of the Neretva, it was destroyed on 3 March 1943.

Nature

The Via Dinarica BH-W-06 Prenj Mountain route also begins in Jablanica: it follows the Neretva to the village of Glogošnica and continues to the Međuprenje mountain pass. The route is classified as difficult (T4).

From the centre of Jablanica, hikers reach the Prenj trail by crossing the bridge, walking through the tunnel and turning left after the small bridge. The route described connects the town area with access to the Prenj trail via prominent landmarks.

Water and Activities

The Doljanka River is suitable for sport fishing and camping. Easy mountain hikes are possible along its banks. Activities mentioned for the Šanica River include sport fishing, camping, swimming and ecotourism.

There are campsites and private beaches on the shore of Jablaničko jezero. Thus, in addition to the rivers, lakeshores are also distinct landscape areas in the surroundings of Jablanica.

The cycling routes in Jablanica pass through forests and run along rivers and lakes. Water landscapes and wooded sections therefore also characterise the scenery described for the cycling routes.

Local Cuisine

The Zdrava voda Jablanica restaurant serves spit-roasted lamb as a traditional local speciality. The restaurant is located on the M17 main road at the exit from Jablanica towards the Adriatic Sea.
