Zandvoorde: Church Art, Polder Nature and Trails

Zandvoorde combines an unusual village layout with church art, a polder landscape and a variety of trails. The ribbon-shaped village developed on a sandy creek ridge formed by sand deposits in a drained creek. The Onze-Lieve-Vrouwkerk Zandvoorde preserves several remarkable historical traces. There is also the Neo-Gothic side altar of Our Lady, created by Julius Goethals and installed in May 1921.

Another religious landmark is the chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima at the corner of Zwanenlaan and Kapittelstraat. It was built in 1945. A pilgrimage took place at this chapel and was described as an annual event. The local farm heritage also includes Hoeve De Zande. The farmhouse, bakehouse, stables, cross barn, carriage house, cowshed and horse stable are protected as a monument.

Hiking Between Creeks and Village

The 13-kilometre Krekenwandelroute is designed as a circular walk and explores the Geuzenbos, Grote Keignaert, Zwaanhoek and Zandvoorde.

The history of the trails is also part of the character of the area. The former Ieper–Oostende railway line, which runs through Zandvoorde, is now a walking trail. In 2019, a missing link in the Groene 62 was created between Zandvoordestraat and Maria-Hendrikapark. The Oostendse-Kreken walking route starts at the Egellaan trailhead in Zandvoorde. Polder Nature and Birdwatching
