Tiegem: Culture, Landscape and Special Places

Tiegem combines a distinctive hilly landscape with religious history, protected cultural monuments and paths through the surrounding area. Those planning a trip that brings together nature experiences and discoveries for different age groups will find several clearly distinguishable points of interest here. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, it is therefore worth deciding on the desired focus: landscape, local history, architecture or a stay with walks and time in the park.

Panoramic Views from Tiegemberg

Tiegemberg is a high hilltop on the Scheldt–Leie interfluve. From there, it offers exceptional views for orientation across the wider surroundings. The landscape includes, in particular, the Leie Valley, prominent woodland areas and distinctive church towers. The cultural and historical landscape area of Sint-Arnolduspark and Tiegemberg is protected. This gives the stay a clear landscape and cultural-historical character, without requiring the two aspects to be considered separately.

For active exploration, the Streuvelswandelroute is a good choice. It explores the gently hilly landscape around Tiegemberg, where Streuvels often spent time. The route follows unpaved country lanes and paved tile paths to Tiegemberg. These different path surfaces are just as relevant to planning the day as the gently hilly landscape.

Sint Arnoldus and Protected Buildings

The Sint-Arnoldus Chapel stands at Hofdries, which is described as the place of origin of Tiegem. The chapel was built between 1864 and 1866 by the Kortrijk architect Pierre Croquison and has been a protected monument since 31 January 2018. The history of veneration of Saint Arnoldus also goes back a long way: it began in 1457, when Guillielmus, Bishop of Serepthia and Abbot of Sint-Pietersabdij van Oudenburg, donated a relic to the church of Tiegem. Every year from 15 to 23 August, a Sint-Arnoldus novena is held in the Sint-Arnoldus Chapel.

The historic villas provide further architectural highlights. Villa Zonnekracht is a Cubist residence made up of interlocking geometric brick volumes with one or two storeys. The building was the country home and studio of the Kortrijk artist Lieven Colardyn (1894–1962). Villa 't Vossenhol was built around 1927 as the residence of the painter Staf Stientjes, also known as Gustaaf D'Halluin, and was later run by him as a summer café. Huis Ten Berge also stands on Meuleberg; Vital Moreels had it built in 1908, and it was inhabited by the landscape painter Valerius De Saedeleer (1867–1941) until 1914. The Bergmolen, also known as Stampersmolen, has been a protected monument since 23 June 1960.

Park, Playground and Picnic Planning

Sint-Arnolduspark offers relaxation for walkers and nature lovers and has a playground for children. As a destination for young and old, it can provide a quieter interlude between sightseeing and the cultural programme. If you are planning a picnic, advance reservation is required. This specific note should therefore be included in your planning for the day, especially if time in the park is to be a fixed part of the family programme.

The Right Accommodation for Your Travel Plans

Tiegem is a suitable destination for travellers who choose their stay not only based on accommodation, but also on the experiences they want. If you are primarily interested in views and paths, Tiegemberg and the Streuvelswandelroute should guide your planning. For a cultural and historical focus, the Sint-Arnoldus Chapel, the villas, Huis Ten Berge and the protected Bergmolen come to the fore. Those travelling with children can also consider the playground and Sint-Arnolduspark. This makes it possible to search for a holiday apartment or holiday home according to your personal daily rhythm and preferred Tiegem theme, without reducing the destination to just one attraction.
