Traces of the First World War

The history of Ramskapelle is closely linked to the First World War. The village was first mentioned in the period 1120–1130 as Ramscappla; the name derives from Ram-s-kapella and means “Ram’s chapel”. During the Battle of the Yser, Belgian and French units recaptured Ramskapelle and its mill from German troops on 30 and 31 October 1914.

Several memorial sites make this past tangible. The former railway station was reinforced during the First World War and converted into a machine-gun and observation post. Boyau Hillebrand connected the first defensive line along the former railway route with the Tranchée de Ramscappelle in the second defensive line. A commemorative plaque at the former station ruins recalls the 14th Line Regiment. The chimney of the former brickworks was also converted into an observation post during the war. After the factory buildings had been heavily damaged, the chimney remained standing and was preserved as a war memorial.

Church, Cemetery and Other Monuments

Another focal point is the Sint-Laurentiuskerk. The present building dates from 1923 and is a Neo-Gothic church. It replaced the church that burned down on 25 October 1914. The Romanesque baptismal font was rediscovered in 1925 and is considered the church’s centrepiece. Ramskapelle therefore also offers access to sacred art and the history of reconstruction.

The Belgian military cemetery contains 632 gravestones and is located at the corner of Ramskapellestraat and Frontzate. The name stone “Slag aan de IJzer” commemorates the Battle of the Yser from 18 to 31 October 1914. The monument commemorating the aircraft crash of 28 July 1944 also stands on Hemmestraat. It commemorates the crew of a bomber aircraft from 78 Squadron as well as two civilians.

The miniature mill “Franse 16e Chasseurs à Pied” stands on Molenstraat at its intersection with Diksmuidse Weg, approximately 200 metres west of Ramskapelle church. Another miniature mill, together with Demarcatiepaal Number 3, is located in a specially created flower bed on Molenstraat at its intersection with Zesde Liniestraat, also approximately 200 metres west of the church.
