Discover Heule: History, Culture and Trails

Heule combines remarkable buildings, milling and Streuvels history, and trails for walks and cycling tours. If you are looking for a mix of culture, local history and activity for your trip, you will find various starting points here for planning your days. An apartment or holiday house in Heule provides a base from which you can put together your personal priorities without limiting your stay to a single theme.

Windmill, castle and distinctive local history

One notable historical feature is the Preetjesmolen. It is a windmill with an enclosed base and has the now extremely rare function of a flax scutching mill. It was built around 1866 for the Heule farmer Pieter Deprez-Holvoet. At the Preetjesmolen, Texture, the museum of flax and textiles, occasionally organises guided tours. This may be particularly interesting during your stay if you are interested in crafts, processing and regional industrial history.

The Kasteel van Heule also represents a different architectural era: it was built between 1883 and 1895 in the eclectic style. The Kasteeldomein van Heule includes a landscape-style park with a typical pond and bridges with wrought-iron railings. Since 1971, the Streuvelsmonument has stood in Heule's castle park. It consists of a robust millstone made of hard stone on a column; a four-armed sun symbol is engraved into the surface of the millstone.

Further historical traces can be found at the Hof van Heule. The well-preserved, late-medieval, two-part complex includes a moat as well as an upper-court and lower-court structure with a farm in the lower court. It is also recorded that the lord of the lordship of Heule held the farm as a fief from the Count of Flanders, more precisely from the castle of Kortrijk. The residential house is now protected cultural heritage and the only surviving place in Heule where the young Streuvels grew up.

Water, art and trails

The Heule Watermolen was first mentioned as early as 1284. The centre of Heule-Watermolen developed at the intersection of the Heulebeek and the main road from Kortrijk to Bruges. These historical connections give your trip several perspectives: you can explore mills and waterways, examine architectural history or follow literary traces. The portrait Tineke van Heule depicts a folk girl in a long shirt in an uninhibited and playful pose, adding another motif to this cultural dimension.

Two different routes are the focus for active days. The themed walking route “Streuvelen door Heule” is an approximately 7.5 km circular route starting and ending at the Heuleplaats. Its approximate length helps you plan this walk as a standalone item in your day. De Groene Verbinding is a cycling and walking route that provides a safe connection from Heule to the city centre. This allows you to choose between a themed circular route and a connection for cycling or walking days.

Choose accommodation to suit your travel pace

The centre of Heule has been converted into a cycling zone. If you like to shape your trip around cycling, this feature is relevant when choosing your accommodation. For days focused on cultural history, the windmill, Kasteel van Heule, Streuvelsmonument and Hof van Heule take centre stage; for a more active programme, the circular walk described above and De Groene Verbinding offer different options. The choice of an apartment or holiday house can therefore be guided by whether you mainly want to explore historic sites or combine several days of cycling and walking.

De Warande is freely accessible from sunrise to sunset and can be included as a separate point of orientation in your daily planning. Those travelling with children or several generations can make the trip varied in this way: one day can focus more on buildings and history, and another on a route or the landscape park. The specific interests of your travel group remain decisive, while Heule brings together various cultural and active themes.
