Dranouter combines a historic village centre with musical traditions and longer walks. At the rectangular square of De Plaats stand the Sint-Jan-Baptistkerk and the cemetery surrounding it; beyond the village centre, other themes open up, from signposted walking trails to panoramic information boards about the landscape and its history. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose different focuses rather than getting to know Dranouter through just one experience.

Village Centre and History of Remembrance

The village centre is arranged around De Plaats. The church and cemetery form the centre of the rectangular square and give it a clear spatial layout. Behind the church is a memorial to Petrus Plancius. If you are interested in the history of the village, you will find several points of reference in a small area: the layout of the square, the church complex and the memorial to Plancius.

The history of reconstruction also shapes Dranouter. After the First World War, the village was largely rebuilt according to its pre-war layout. The Dranoutre Military Cemetery offers a different perspective on wartime: it was established in July 1915 and used by combat units and medical field posts until March 1918. These dates bring both the military and medical use of this site during the war into focus.

Festivals with Their Own Character

The Dranouter Festival takes place every year and features bands, a festival market and food trucks. Its history began on a small scale: the first edition of the Dranouter Folk Festival was held in the playground of the boys' school. Later, the festival grew beyond the village and became established at a site just outside the village centre. Today's festival and its history therefore tell two different sides of the same tradition: the annual programme and its beginnings as a small event.

Borelle offers a different occasion, with a specific date: it is celebrated every year on the third Saturday in March. During the Borelletocht, the procession heads towards Waaienberg, led by the decorated Borellekar and the Borellemusikanten. While the festival features bands, a market and food trucks, Borelle is marked by its recurring March date and procession. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, this distinction may help with your planning.

Explore the Walking Trails and Landscape

The Eeuwenhout and Douvevallei nature reserve lies between Loker and Dranouter. It includes several signposted walking trails and forms a continuous area where you can walk for hours. Spending a longer stretch of time on foot is therefore a distinct part of a trip, alongside exploring the village centre.

Other walking experiences offer different points of interest. Belevingsplek De Monteberg can only be reached on foot or by bicycle. Three panoramic information boards explain the landscape and the Celtic and prehistoric history of the hill. The Dranouter junction walk climbs to the Hille, just across the border, with views of France. The boards provide an introduction to the landscape and its history; the route to the Hille combines the climb with a view across the border.

Listen to Music and Try Making Sounds

Nouter Play turns sound into an interactive activity: participants compete through challenges and sound games, complete stages, collect points along the way and experiment with noises and tones. This sets the activity apart from the Nouter Club, which presents roots music ranging from traditional to experimental. The Nouter Club focuses on a concert programme that changes over time; at Nouter Play, trying things out for yourself and competition are part of the format.

When looking for a holiday rental in Dranouter, you can start by thinking about what you would like your stay to focus on: local history and recurring festivals, longer walks or an active sound experience. These interests can give your trip a direction without requiring you to fit every theme into the same day.
