Onhaye between Heritage and Nature
Accommodation in Onhaye
Onhaye can be explored from several perspectives: its heritage ranges from the remains of medieval fortifications to a 19th-century water machine. It also offers a protected area in the Flavion Valley, as well as opportunities for hiking, cycling and seasonal outings. When planning your stay, you can start by deciding whether architectural history, nature or active pursuits should be your main focus.
Architectural History and Heritage
The village of Falaën bears the “Plus Beaux Villages de Wallonie” label in recognition of the unity and quality of its buildings. Among its historic buildings is the Château-ferme de Falaën, built in the 17th century as a fortified seigneurial farm. The parish church of Saint-Léger was built from limestone in the first half of the 18th century; its current façade and tower date from 1848. These buildings illustrate different phases of construction: the building of the farm and church, followed by the later design of the façade and tower.
The ruins of Montaigle Castle are the remains of a medieval fortress at the confluence of the Flavion and Molignée rivers. They are considered an outstanding part of Wallonia’s heritage. The Musée archéologique de Montaigle covers 100 m² and displays objects discovered at the site, arranged by theme and chronology. Alongside the fortress’s history, archaeological finds take centre stage.
Another chapter in local history is told by the machine à eau de Sommière, also known as the machine à eau de Fechelenne. The installation dates from 1897 and is one of the oldest of its kind. Its restoration is complete. As a piece of technical heritage, it offers a different perspective from the medieval ruins and the historic religious and farm buildings.
Nature in the Flavion Valley
A Natura 2000 protected area has been established in the Flavion Valley. The area’s forests provide a habitat for black storks and several species of woodpecker. The focus here is therefore not a single building, but a forest habitat and its birdlife.
Hiking, Cycling and Seasonal Outings
The “Weillen & Sommière” walking route is 9 km long, rated moderate and listed as taking three hours. This information comes from the 2018 Heritage Guide. It provides a useful framework for planning your outing; check the latest route information before setting off.
The “Grand Onhaye par Grange et Montaigle” cycling route is 23 km long; route details may be revised, so it is advisable to check the current route description. The Draisines de la Molignée offer a different experience: pedal-powered vehicles travel along a former railway line in the heart of the valley. The service operates seasonally; check the current dates in advance. Hiking, cycling and riding the draisines are different ways to plan an active day.
Tastes and Accommodation Choices

When looking for a holiday rental in Onhaye, use the experiences you want to have as your starting point: should your stay focus mainly on architectural history, nature or active excursions? This way, your choice reflects your travel plans without having to combine different routes into a single outing.
