Castles, Donjons and the History of the Region

The Donjon de Villeret reaches far back into the Middle Ages: it was first mentioned in 1278 and was built in the 13th century. At the same time, it is considered the best-preserved example of a medieval noble residence in Wallonia. The Château de Balâtre complements this historical focus with a fortified complex made of limestone blocks. It stands on a promontory above the valley floor of the Grand-Vaux and developed from a medieval donjon dating from the 12th century into a quadrilateral structure.

The history of the Neanderthals can also be explored in Jemeppe-Sur-Sambre. The Espace de l’Homme de Spy offers a scenographic tour about the discovery of the Homme de Spy in 1886, the significance of the site and the facets of a Neanderthal’s everyday life more than 40,000 years ago. Spyrou, a hyperrealistic figure of the Homme de Spy, makes the visit even more vivid. Following the floods on the night of 30–31 May 2026, the Espace de l’Homme de Spy is currently closed.

Grotte de Spy and Paths Through the Landscape

The Grotte de Spy overlooks the Orneau valley. The area combines rocky limestone slopes, damp areas on the valley floor and woodland, and is home to rich biodiversity. The protected site of the Grotte de Spy is freely accessible. You can reach it on foot via a path along the Orneau from the Espace de l’Homme de Spy or from the car park at the end of Rue du Pajot in Spy. For a family trip, this landscape can therefore be planned as a separate focus on nature and history, without requiring all travellers to take part in the same activity.

A 3.8 km circular walk leads from the Espace de l’Homme de Spy to the Grotte de Spy. In addition, the 2.5 km fitness trail in the Bois de la Grotte starts at the car park of the Grotte de Spy. Further walking paths run through the Bois de la Betche al Rotche and invite visitors to relax. Those who prefer a longer route can consider the 7 km hike organised by the tourist office through Onoz, Fayat and Jemeppe. The “Nature, Histoire et Patrimoine à Onoz et Spy” route is 8 km long and starts at the Espace de l’Homme de Spy in Onoz.

RAVeL, Cycling and Unusual Experiences

RAVeL paths lead to Jemeppe-Sur-Sambre and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. The regional 47.5 km Namur–Charleroi section follows the Sambre RAVeL, runs mainly on asphalt and has a flat elevation profile. La Noue de Mornimont is listed as a stop to visit on the EuroVelo 3 section between Namur and Charleroi. This means that, alongside short walks, longer and relatively clearly described cycling options are also available.

The Terragame Center de Spy provides a contrast to castles, caves and historic trails. It offers multiplayer experiences in hyper-realistic virtual reality on a 600 m² play area. Each experience takes place in a 400 m² area reserved for groups of four to six players. The Musée de la Typographie explains the impact of Gutenberg’s invention through an informative guided tour featuring tools, machines and documents from a family-run printing works that operated from 1920 to 1990.
